Ishan Kishan, Deepak Chahar costliest buys on day one
India wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan was the costliest buy on the opening day of the IPL 2022 mega auction held in Bangalore, with his former team and five-time title winners Mumbai Indians spending a high price of INR 15.25 crores to acquire his services. Deepak Chahar became the second costliest purchase on Saturday with Chennai Super Kings splurging INR 14 crores on the bowling all-rounder, who has proven his batting skills with the Indian team in recent opportunities.
The right-arm fast bowler Avesh Khan became the costliest purchased by any team among uncapped players in the history of IPL auctions as he was roped in by Lucknow Super Giants for a price of INR 10crores.
It was also a day full of disappointment for plenty of big names who went unsold, with the list including one of IPL’s highest run-maker Suresh Raina, former Rajasthan Royals captain Steve Smith, Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa, South Africa’s Imran Tahir, India’s Umesh Yadav, Wriddhiman Saha, England’s Adil Rashid, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi and South Africa’s David Miller.
The IPL 2022 mega auction witnessed teams favouring fast bowlers more than spinners, as apart from Chahar, New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, India’s Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur went for INR 10 crores 10.75 crores respectively.
Kolkata Knight Riders spent INR 12.25 crores to acquire the services of India middle-order batsman and former Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer, who can also serve as a captain as the team looks to revive their squad going forward into the 10-team tournament. KKR had released their regular captain Eoin Morgan in the lead up to the mega auction.
