The current batch of Indian selectors under the chairman Chetan Sharma are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that they have tried and tested almost all players from their rich pool of cricketers ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year, followed by the 50-over World Cup which India will host next year.

With a young side producing impeccable performance against the West Indies in the ODI series, the Indian selectors continued to show faith in the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan who was named the captain for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe for a three-match series in August.

The inclusion of several young players including the uncapped Rahul Tripathi, all-rounder Washington Sundar and Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav meant that senior players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma — the regular captain — were rested from the series.

However, the Indian selectors are expected to announce a full strength squad for the Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE, which will include the former captain Virat Kohli, who was believed to be taking the flight to Zimbabwe in order to find his long lost form with the bat.

But the Indian side will feel confident having Deepak Chahar back into the squad after a long injury layoff, due to which he also missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 tournament earlier this year.

The squad to tour Zimbabwe also includes spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, who is currently busy playing county cricket, as well as Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav.

The regular Indian vice-captain KL Rahul has not completely recovered from the coronavirus infection which kept him out of the tour to the West Indies, and he will once again miss the plane to Zimbabwe to focus on his complete recovery having undergone a surgery previously for sports hernia.

The Indian selectors have left out a huge chunk of players who were sent to the West Indies which includes middle order batsmen Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and in-form legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

The Asia Cup 2022 will start just five days after the conclusion of the Indian tour of Zimbabwe. The third and final ODI will be played in Harare on August 22, the same day on which the Indian government has requested BCCI to organise a match between an Indian team and the Rest of the World 11 in order to mark the 75th year of India’s independence.

India’s squad for 3 ODIs: Shikhar Dhawan (captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammad Siraj, Deepak Chahar.
