Djokovic and Medvedev set to compete for US Open title: 2023 US Open Semi-Final Roundup
Previous year’s champion Carlos Alcaraz crashed out of the tournament after being defeated by the world number three Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final of the 2023 US Open. The other match including Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton was a one-sided affair where the Serbian won in straight sets.
In Women’s Singles, Aryna Sabalenka would look to grab her first US Open title but she will be playing against Coco Gauff who is in terrific touch. After her victory against Karolina Muchova, Gauff became the first American teenager since Serena Williams to win over 25 Grand Slam matches in a two-season span.
Here are the highlights of the Men’s and Women’s semi-final matches:
Men’s Singles
Match 1: Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev
Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev defeated the world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final of the US Open 2023 by 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, and 6-3 to make it to the finals of the tournament. The two champion players started the game on a terrific note as the set went into a tie-breaker where Medvedev had the last laugh.
The world number three then easily won the next set by 6-1 as the title holder was quite low on confidence. Though Alcaraz made a comeback in the third set, Medvedev didn’t allow the game to go to the fifth set as he won the fourth set 6-3 to clinch the match.
Now, the star player from Russia would look to grab his second US Open title after winning the first one in 2021. He would once again be up against Novak Djokovic but the Serbian has been in a form of life and won’t give up easily.
Match 2: Novak Djokovic vs Ben Shelton
The result was quite predictable even before the start of the game, however, it was a magnificent effort from Shelton to reach this stage. World number two Djokovic won the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 to make his way into the finals of the tournament.
Shelton gave a tough fight to the Serbian giant in the final set which went into a tie-breaker, however, the 10-time finalist of the US Open won it in the end to create history. Now, Djokovic is all set to meet Daniil Medvedev in the final of the tournament where he would be looking to take the revenge of 2021 when the Russian player defeated him in the final.
Women’s Singles
Match 1: Madison Keys vs Aryna Sabalenka
Aryna Sabalenka created history by entering her first-ever US Open finals after getting the better of Madison Keys in the semis. She won the match 0-6, 7-6, 7-6 to enter the finals. After not winning a single game in the first set, Sabalenka made an outstanding comeback to win the next two sets and that too in a tie-breaker.
This was one of the finest comebacks in the history of the tournament and now Sabalenka would like to win her first-ever US Open title. She already has one Major to her name in the form of the Australian Open 2023 which she won against Elena Rybakina but Coco Gauff has been exceptional so far in the tournament so it is not going to be easy for the Belarusian to overcome this challenge.
Match 2: Coco Gauff vs Karolina Muchova
It was a quite comfortable victory for the American player as she defeated Muchova by 6-4, 7-5 to make her first-ever US Open finals. It was a remarkable achievement for the 19-year-old Gauff as she might create history in the final.
On the other hand, Karolina Muchova gave her best during the entire tournament, however, failed to perform well in the semi-final. She had a great French Open this year where she reached the final but lost against Iga Swiatek.
