Top 6 Batters with Most Ducks in IPL History
It has been an ordinary season for Rohit Sharma so far in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League. After being removed from the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians, Rohit has also failed to churn out any great performances from the bat. Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that the franchise is reeling at the bottom of the points table with consecutive three losses to its name.
Adding to the miseries, with his latest duck, Rohit Sharma managed to add his name at the top of a rather embarrassing list of the batters with the most ducks in the Indian T20 extravaganza. However, the Indian skipper is not the only big name on the list.
In this article, let’s walk through the batters with the most ducks in the Indian Premier League history.
#6 Piyush Chawla: 15 Ducks
One of the veteran players to find a place on this list is the Mumbai Indians spinner, Piyush Chawla. The presence of the 35-year-old in the list should not come as a surprise, as he has been a part of 184 IPL games so far with teams like MI, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings.
Chawla has a total of 612 runs to his name at a strike rate of 110.27 while his tally of ducks currently stands at 15.
The spinner’s latest duck came during the Mumbai Indians’ opening match of the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League against Gujarat Titans. MI was given the task of chasing 169 runs at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, Piyush came to bat in tenth place and scored a golden duck on the delivery by Umesh Yadav.
#6 Sunil Narine: 15 Ducks
Ever since the beginning of his career in the cash-rich league in 2012, Sunil Narine has played for only one franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders. In his career of over a decade, Narine has smacked a lot of runs and picked crucial wickets while playing a key role in helping the Knight Riders win the title twice in 2012 and 2014.
However, alongside the glory, he has also attracted some criticism because of his tally of 15 ducks in 164 games. He also boasts of scoring 1095 runs at an excellent strike rate of over 160 along with picking a whopping 165 wickets at an average of under 26. Meanwhile, it was during the 2023 season that the all-rounder bagged his 15th duck for KKR.
#6 Mandeep Singh: 15 Ducks
The only player who features in this list and is not a part of the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League is Mandeep Singh. The batter first made an appearance in the tournament in 2010 and went on to play for big teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals.
Mandeep has so far played 111 IPL games, scoring 1706 runs at an average of below 21 and a strike rate of 122.9. However, he failed to deliver any standout performance in recent years and went unsold during the IPL 2024 auction.
Despite Mandeep playing only a handful of games in the past few years, he occupies a place in the list of batters with the most ducks alongside Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla with 15 zeroes.
#3 Glenn Maxwell: 16 Ducks
The 15th match of the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League saw Glenn Maxwell climbing a spot up in the list of the batters with the most ducks in the tournament. Royal Challengers Bengaluru were chasing a good score of 182 runs against the Lucknow Super Giants in their home ground at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium when Maxwell played a dismal knock of zero runs off just two balls.
Mayank Yadav bowled a short delivery and in a bid to smack a pull shot, Maxwell ended up landing the ball in Nicholas Pooran’s hands as the Australian succumbed to a 16th duck in IPL.
The hard-hitter made his debut in the league in IPL 2012 and so far has played a total of 128 games accumulating 2750 runs at an average of 25.7 and an impressive strike rate of 156.96. Apart from RCB, he has been a part of many other franchises like the Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals.
#1 Rohit Sharma: 17 Ducks
Since his debut in the Indian Premier League in 2008 with Deccan Chargers, Rohit Sharma has featured in a total of 246 matches scoring 6280 runs at an average of 29.48 and a strike rate of 130.34.
However, along with stunning batting records, Rohit also has a poor statistic of bagging 17 ducks. His most recent duck came in IPL 2024 as the Mumbai-based franchise locked horns with Rajasthan Royals in their third match of the tournament.
Batting first, MI recorded a forgettable score of 125 runs as the former skipper bagged a golden duck. It was Trent Boult who was successful in tempting Rohit to hand an easy catch to Sanju Samson.
With this, the 36-year-old equalled Dinesh Karthik’s record and now occupies the top position alongside the wicketkeeper-batter in the list of batters with the most ducks and would like to prove his credentials ahead of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.
#1 Dinesh Karthik: 17 Ducks
Dinesh Karthik is also a part of this embarrassing list with the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma as he also has 17 zeroes to his name. Interestingly, both Sharma and Karthik have been a part of an equal number of IPL matches, i.e. 246.
However, unlike Rohit, Karthik has had a tumultuous journey in the tournament having represented teams like Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Lions and currently representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Karthik has collected 4606 runs, including 20 fifties in the course of 17 years in the Indian Premier League at an average of 26.02 and a strike rate of over 133. Meanwhile, it was last year during a game against Gujarat Titans at the Chinnaswamy Stadium that the veteran recorded his 17th duck. The left-arm seamer Yash Dayal was the one to trick the batter as he bagged a golden duck.
