SRH coach Muttiah Muralitharan undergoes heart surgery in Chennai
Former Sri Lanka spinner and current bowling coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Sunrisers Hyderabad, Muttiah Muralitharan on Sunday had an angioplasty done in Chennai after a blocked artery was discovered recently during a routine checkup in his heart.
“A blockage was detected at the end of March. So it (angioplasty) was a routine procedure that was supposed to be conducted. He is doing well,”
a source was quoted as saying by PTI.
It has been reported that the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer had a stent fitted in his heart to open a blocked artery. He has been admitted in a well-known hospital in Chennai, and once he is fit enough to join the IPL cricket team back in action during the ongoing 2021 edition of the T20 tournament, Muralitharan will have to undergo the necessary quarantine guidelines before rejoining the SRH team.
Muralitharan, who had a controversial career owing to his debatable bowling action, finished as the highest wicket taker in the history of test cricket with 800 wickets in 133 matches at an average of 22.72. A World Cup winner in 1996, Muralitharan also played 350 ODIs and 12 T20Is, taking 534 and 13 wickets respectively in the two white-ball cricket formats. His 534 wickets in ODIs is also the highest for any bowler in the history of one-day cricket.
The right arm spinner was also a player in the Indian Premier league before she turned into Cochin, as it represented the franchisees in Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Royal Challengers Bangalore before he joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad as their bowling coach in the year 2015.
