Ivan Perisic stars for Inter in our Serie A Team of the Season

Milan ended their 11-year Scudetto drought as they won the 2021-22 edition of Serie A by edging arch-rivals Inter by a two-point margin. Undoubtedly, the credit for the title triumph should go to their players but that doesn’t mean footballers from other clubs were any behind. Here is the combined Serie A starting XI of the season lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Mike Maignan (Milan)

One of the reasons for Milan’s road to triumph was their miserly defence. They conceded only 31 goals, with goalkeeper Mike Maignan guarding them between the sticks. The Frenchman made most of his reflexes to make life tougher for the opposition.

Theo Hernandez (Milan)

Left-back Theo Hernandez is another Frenchman who makes it to our list. Having made 122 tackles this season, Theo was always up to the task whenever Milan needed him. The 24-year-old is also known for his lung-bursting runs down the flanks and his 6 assists and 5 goals corroborate it.

Alessandro Bastoni (Inter)

Inter was too dependent on their defensive prowess to win the league as they conceded only 32 goals this season. However, it wasn’t meant to be for the defending champions but left centre-back Alessandro Bastoni rose up when asked to in an injury-riddled season. Bastoni conjured 94 tackles and 17 blocks while winning 108 aerial duels.

Giovanni di Lorenzo (Napoli)

Napoli looked strong in the beginning but lost their steam midway and didn’t trouble Inter and Milan in the title race. Giovanni di Lorenzo was a force to reckon with for the Naples as his continuous passes into the final third made things tough for the opposition and got duly rewarded with 5 assists. Lorenzo also made 106 tackles for Napoli.

Juan Cuadrado (Juventus)

Right-back Juan Cuadrado might not have age on his side but made the most of his experience to guide Juventus to a top-four finish. With 104 tackles and 112 intercepted passes, Cuadrado is also known for his knack forward having found the net four times and made four assists.

Rafael Leao (Milan)

Rafael Leao has been a revelation for Milan this season with his cut-back passes from the left flank helping the side win the title. With 10 assists and 10 goals to his name, Leao was always in the midst of things when goals were scored by Milan. The Portuguese youngster is making a lot of heads turn in the transfer market with his impressive performances while Milan is trying their best to give him an extension.

Fabian Ruiz (Napoli)

Ruiz Fabian was always up to the task whenever Napoli required him to win possession in the centre of the park or line up the forward players for a chance. Fabian’s one-touch passes quickly turned attack into defence and his knack for scoring goals from outside the box earned him 7 goals this Serie A season.

Ivan Perisic (Inter)

Ivan Perisic continuously threatened the opposition players with his crosses from the left flank or corner-kicks and that earned him 7 assists this season. The Croatian also has 8 goals to his name, including two on the final matchday.

Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo)

Sassuolo might have finished in the bottom half of the table but Domenico Berardi’s 15 assists, the highest by any player in Serie A this season, makes him stand out. His case becomes more compelling as 13 of them came from open play. With 15 goals and 47 shots on target, the right-winger was a one-man army for the beleaguered Sassuolo.

Paulo Dybala (Juventus)

Paulo Dybala scored 10 goals for Juventus but was unable to take them through the line. With 39 shots on target, Dybala was in the right place at the right time on most occasions. He also had 6 assists to show for his efforts.

Ciro Immobile (Lazio)

Ciro Immobile became the highest goalscorer in Serie A this season, with 27 goals from 31 appearances. Despite his efforts, the Lazio captain was unable to guide his side into a top-four finish. With Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Serie A, the 32-year-old entertained the fans with his goal-scoring abilities.
