The Argentine could not speak easily about this difficult decision

Barcelona forward Sergio Agüero decided to end his football career after a cardiac episode in October. He announced this at a special press conference on Wednesday.

This day will go down in history, but with negative emotions.

“My health comes first. The doctors have advised me to stop playing, so I’m leaving Barcelona and retiring from professional football”,

said the striker, unable to hold back tears.

You can watch the full speech with subtitles here:

Agüero played his last match for Barcelona on 30 October against Alaves (1-1). In the 51st minute of the Matchday 12 of the Spanish championship the footballer fell on the pitch and grabbed his chest, then he was taken to hospital. Doctors diagnosed the striker with an episode of tachycardia.

After leaving Manchester City as a free agent the forward played a total of 5 games for Barça with one goal scored.

Plenty of footballers and Kun’s teammates expressed their warmest words in support of him:

PSG striker Lionel Messi has addressed Sergio Agüero:

“Almost our entire career together, Kun… Together we have had beautiful moments and not so beautiful moments, but they united us more and more, our friendship strengthened. And we’re going to continue living them together off the pitch.”

“Not so long ago we felt a great joy of winning the Сopa America, with all the achievements you made in England… And the truth is that now it hurts a lot to see you have to stop doing what you love the most because of what happened to you. Of course, you will remain happy because you are a person who spreads happiness. Those you love will be with you.”

“A new phase of your life is beginning, and I am convinced that you will live it with the smile and enthusiasm that you put into everything. All the best in this phase!!! I love you very much, mate. I’ll miss the matches and moments we shared together in the Argentina national team!”

Messi wrote.

“One of the best strikers ever! Want to wish you all the best for the future legend. See you soon”

said his ex-teammate from Man City Kevin De Bruyne.

Yaya Touré also stated that he is very happy to have spent the wonderful years of his career playing with the Argentine in the same team.

Ex-City mate David Silva, who now plays for Real Sociedad in the Spainish La Liga:

“Friend, I know you had to make a very difficult decision, but you are walking away as a LEGEND. It has been my pride to share so many moments together, on and off the field. You are my accomplice! Good luck in the new phase!”

That goal, which brought Manchester City their first league title in a long time, will forever be in the hearts of all fans around the world:

In 2019, the BBC rolled out a list of the best internationals in Premier League history, with former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry in first place with 45% of the vote. Second place went to Cristiano Ronaldo (14%). The third is another Man United representative Eric Cantona (12%).

At the same time, all three have scored fewer goals in the EPL: Henry – 175, Cristiano Ronaldo – 84 (not taking into account the Portuguese’s second coming), and Cantona – 73. If we compare championships, Agüero is again first with five cups. Cantona (4), Ronaldo (3) and Henry (2) are next.

Statistically, Sergio Agüero has also cleared Thierry Henry in terms of the amount of time taken to score, with the Argentine needing 108 minutes and the Frenchman 121. Third in the Premier League is the legendary Alan Shearer and his 146 minutes for each goal.

  • During his career, the striker has played for Independiente, Atletico, Manchester City, Barcelona and the Argentine national team.
  • At club level, he won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup, five English championships, six Сarabao Cups, one FA Cup and three FA Super Cups. Agüero won the 2008 Olympics as part of Argentina’s national team, as well as the America’s Cup 2021.
