Kerala Blasters has signed Croatian defender Marko Leskovic on a one-year deal until the end of the 2021-22 Indian Super League season.

After signing for the Yellow Army, Leskovic said,

“I’m happy to be coming to Kerala Blasters. We have a lot of challenges ahead of us but my intention and motivation to come to this great club is clear – I can’t wait to start winning together.”

After coming through the Osijek youth academy in Croatia, the central defender spent three seasons with the senior team before switching to Rijeka.

In his three-year stay at Rijeka, the club finished runner-up in all three seasons of the Prva HNL, the top-tier football league of Croatia. The defender did lift a couple of trophies with the club though as Rijeka won the cup double in 2014 winning both Croatian Cup and the Croatian Super Cup.

In 2016, Dinamo Zagreb came calling for Leskovic and the defender ended up staying for five seasons at the club including a single-season loan to Lokomotiva Zagreb. In the 2016-17 season, he once again failed to get his hands on the Prva HNL trophy as Dinamo finished runner-up in the league but won the league consecutively in the next two seasons. Leskovic also got his hands on the Crotian Cup (2018) and the Croatian Super Cup (2019) in Dinamo Zagreb colors.

After playing at the U-18, U-19, U-20, and U-21 levels of the Croatian national team, Leskovic made his debut for the senior team against Argentina and has 4 senior appearances for his nation.

Kerala Blasters Sporting Director Karolis Skinkys praised the club’s latest signing and expressed delight in finishing the recruitment of overseas and domestic players for the 2021-22 ISL season.

He said,

“Lešković is a high-level defender who has come to Kerala Blasters with high motivation to perform well. I’m happy that we finalized this deal and finished recruitment for the upcoming season. I wish Marko all the best this season.”

The 30-year old defender is primarily a centre-half but also has experience of playing at left-back and in central defensive midfield positions. Leskovic’s versatility and the towering figure of the new signing Enes Sipovic would help the Blasters keep it solid at the back throughout the upcoming season of the ISL.
