Germany Women News & Current Form:

The German women’s national team is the most titled team in European football. While they have only twice won the Women’s World Cup in 2003 and 2007, they have appeared in the final stages of Euros ten times, winning the gold medals on eight occasions. A phenomenal result! These accolades are the envy of even the men’s team. These accolades are the envy of even the men’s team.

However, their worst result in history came in the last edition of continental tournament, in 2017, when they were eliminated in the quarter-finals, a sign of their certain decline. Things have improved for the German side so far: they won all three matches in the group stage by a combined score of 9-0, and in the quarter-finals they beat Austria 2-0, guaranteeing themselves medals of the tournament.

Germany are used to playing dominant football, but at the same time are a very flexible group, sometimes playing pragmatically and defensively, as they did against the Spaniards. Four games played, zero goals conceded, and they allowed a minimum number of chances at their own goal. At the same time, Die Mannschaft make excellent use of their opponents’ mistakes.

The team’s top scorer so far is Alexandra Popp, who has scored a goal in each of the four meetings, she became the first to do so in a single EC campaign.

France Women News & Current Form:

The French team is experiencing perhaps the best times in its history. The French have previously never won a medals in a major international competition. Their best result was fourth place at the 2011 World Cup, but that eventual achievement has not been followed by any significant improvement. The Three Colours first qualified for the continental championships in 1997 and have since qualified for the final part of the tournament six times in a row, but have never advanced from the group stage to the play-offs before.

And now, playing at UEFA EURO 2022, the French national side have a chance to snatch a silverware for the first time. Les Bleus defeated Italy and Belgium 5-1 and 2-1 respectively in the group stages, then drew 1-1 with Iceland and afterwards had a nervous struggle to overcome the Netherlands 1-0 in the quarter-finals. It was all decided by a spot-kick. This match left a lot of questions.

France are also used to playing dominant football. However, the Germans know how to counter this. The French have been less convincing on the defensive end of the tournament, and in the quarter-finals they spent half an hour more on the pitch due to extra time. Lack of experience can also let them down, as they reached the semi-finals for the first time in history.

The French have also been conceding regularly: in all three meetings at the group stage of the tournament, and in the quarter-finals, although they played to nil, the Netherlands had their chances in the attack.

Moreover, France lost their leading scorer in this edition of the tournament as Marie-Antoinette Katoto suffered an injury. It is time for Corinne Diacre to use her secret ideas, if they exist of course.

What has been said before the match:

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, Germany coach:

“We know that France have tremendous quality in transition and fantastic individual players with a lot of pace. We’ll give everything we have on Wednesday. I believe France also respect us after our performance [in the quarter-finals]. From that point of view, it’s going to be a game of equals.”

Corinne Diacre, France coach:

“I’m very proud because this team aimed at a big target; this team gives absolutely everything. This group is doing well; we have a semi-final to prepare for now, calmly. We will savour… getting through, and we are taking it step by step as always.”

Germany Women vs France Women Prediction:

In essence, it is a meeting of very strong teams that are worthy of playing in the final. The German team is once again a contender to win the tournament – the class and experience of the players are on their side, while France have enough quality performers who can decide the outcome of the meeting. Except that such variables as nervousness due to inexperience and hopes for luck as in the last match do not look like prerequisites for victory. On paper, the nominal home side have the better chance. No forced action is to be expected either, no goalscoring extravaganza is envisaged given the importance of the forthcoming encounter. It will probably be a minimum victory for Die Mannschaft.
