Eintracht Frankfurt will host West Ham United at Deutsche Bank Park in the UEFA Europa League semi-final, second leg. The match will take place on May 6, beginning at 00:30 IST.

The Champions League is traditionally followed by a less prestigious but no less spectacular tournament, the Europa League.

The teams will play the Europa League semi-final on 5 May night. The Germans are closer to the final, having beaten London side 2-1 a week ago. But do not underestimate the visitors. There are no weak teams at this stage, and a one goal lead doesn’t guarantee anything for Eintracht. Let’s compare the form, strengths and weaknesses of the teams.

Parimatchnews will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Eintracht Frankfurt News & Current Form:

Eintracht have been showing wonders of metamorphosis in the second half of the season. Three league games were lost but they got past Real Betis in the Europa League; then a streak of three faded draws and after that they sensationally defeat Barcelona; just one point in games against Union, Hoffenheim and Bayer, but in the first leg of the semi-final, they were stronger than West Ham. However, Oliver Glasner’s team were not favourites in either game of the tournament.

This dynamic may be due to Eintracht’s unwillingness to waste energy in the Bundesliga. There, the club settled in the middle of the table and lost motivation long ago. But the first European Cup victory in 42 years is a great incentive for sure. However, there are two more high-profile games to be played – it is unclear whether the modest German club have the energy to go all the way.

It will be particularly difficult in the next match, which will probably have to be played without key defender Martin Hintergger and midfielder Jesper Lindström. Both of them suffered injuries after their trip to London and did not play against Bayer. However, the head coach updated the press that there is a possiblity for them to be present in the upcoming encounter.

Overall, defensive holes are a serious problem for Eintracht, which concede quite a lot during the season. In the Bundesliga, only teams from the bottom half of the table are worse than the Eagles. In the last game, Bayer were close to a thrashing victory, had they executed their plenty of moment a little better.

The good news for fans of the German club, however, is that the Hammers have a nightmare away record. In ten games, the club has seven defeats and two draws, one of which was in the FA Cup with Kidderminster from the sixth division.

West Ham News & Current Form:

Unlike Eintracht, West Ham were struggling till the last moment to secure a place in the European competitions through the English championship, but playing on two fronts has depleted the Hammers. In the last four games of the EPL, West Ham have only scored one point through a draw against Burnley, so the club has fallen out of the peloton of contenders even for the Europa League.

The Hammers’ maximum potential is the Conference League, or the Champions League if they manage to beat Eintracht and then win the UEL final. In general, West Ham have a 3-match losing streak, which indicates a decline. On the other hand, in this period, the Hammers played not only Eintracht but also Arsenal and Chelsea. In other words, the Londoners’ calendar in this period was extremely challenging.

In the last match, the London side, of course, had aimed for a completely different result, but the goal, conceded in the 49th second, turned everything upside down.

After that, the Hammers had to be less risky, constantly looking towards their own goal in order not to stall another counterattack by the audacious Germans.

All in all, West Ham were not quite ready for the match with Eintracht. The first game showed that David Moyes’ team lacked tactical cunning – the Londoners acted too simply and straight.

Injured: Ben Johnson, Angelo Ogbonna.

Statistical preview of the match Eintracht Frankfurt vs West Ham:

  • In three of the last five matches against Eintracht, both teams have scored. West Ham have exactly the same statistics.

What has been said before the match:

Oliver Glasner, Frankfurt coach:

“I get the feeling that the whole of Germany support Eintracht in Europe. There’s recognition for our performances, but it’s not about living in the past. We need to stay focused and play our game on the pitch.”

“Every player will be important tomorrow. We have to function as a team and can only win together. It’s important that we support each other and are very disciplined in our covering.”

“We’re expecting opponents who will try everything to reach the final. Our approach is clear, though: we want to cause problems for their defence. Our strategy is to get forward and constantly keep them busy. We’ll play to win from the get-go with our fans behind us. Our strategy must involve causing problems to the opposition defence. We need an even better performance than the first leg.”

David Moyes, West Ham manager:

“We have to chase the game because we’re a goal down, but not necessarily from minute one. We need to manage the game correctly. Frankfurt are a goal up and need to manage it correctly – sometimes that’s a worry as well.”

“I don’t think I learnt anything new about Frankfurt because I knew about the style they play in. There are quite a few people in Germany I speak to regularly as well. I thought the two teams were quite even on the night. We may see something different tomorrow night, but we think we’ve got as good an opportunity as them. We have to chase the game because we’re one goal down, but in the same breath, they’re the ones who have to protect it.”

“It’s a big game for me as well and the players, any player, anybody who’s played football will tell you the semi-final of a European competition is huge for anybody. It’s big for me as well. I want to take the team to the final. We believe that if we get it right we can do so, so we have to manage that.

We know Frankfurt are in front and we’ve got a bit to do.”

Eintracht Frankfurt vs West Ham Prediction:

The teams will turn themselves inside out to make it to the final, but Eintracht have a better chance as of now. The Eagles will play at home with the massive support of the stands, and they are also great at counter-attacking – the Barcelona players still wake up in a sweat when they remember the Frankfurt club’s dagger attacks.

Still, we don’t expect the Germans to have a better chance of reaching the final – the sides are evenly matched, and we shouldn’t be deceived by the scoreline in the last game as West Ham were more interesting and dangerous, poor finishing was the problem.

So it’s a bit risky to pick one team over the other, but there’s a good chance that both teams will score, the Hammers need to attack and go forward, and the Eagles will certainly have chances to catch the Londoners on the counter-attack.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say:  both teams to score – Yes.
