ATK Mohun Bagan vs Jamshedpur: Preview and Prediction

Jamshedpur will be desperate for a turnaround

The first match of matchday 10 of the 2022-23 Indian Super League season will see ATK Mohun Bagan taking on Jamshedpur at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

ATK Mohun Bagan can be fairly satisfied with their performance so far. While the Mariners have certainly not been the best team in the competition, they have done just about enough to be among the top four, having won five matches and earned 16 points.

The story of Jamshedpur is completely the opposite. Last season’s ISL League Winners’ Shield-winning team has not got going at all this time around, having won only one of their first eight matches. With just 4 points to their name, the Red Miners are struggling in the 10th position.

Current Form

ATK Mohun Bagan had a poor start to their journey, as in their first match, Juan Ferrando’s side was handed a 1-2 defeat by Chennaiyin. That, however, was followed by a four-match unbeaten streak – where they won against Kerala Blasters, East Bengal and NorthEast United, and drew against Mumbai City.

The Mariners’ joy ultimately turned into dystopia when they suffered a 0-3 humping defeat against Goa, but instead of letting the defeat derail them, Ferrando’s side bounced back with back-to-back 1-0 wins against Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Jamshedpur’s start was similar to that of their opposition. They lost 2-3 against Odisha in their first match but then were unbeaten in their next two matches – drawing 1-1 against Mumbai City and winning 1-0 against NorthEast United.

However, just when it seemed things were falling into place, the world turned upside down for Aidy Boothroyd’s team. They are coming into this match on the back of five consecutive defeats – against Goa, Hyderabad, Chennaiyin, East Bengal and Kerala Blasters.

Head to Head Record

The head-to-head records are inclined in favour of Jamshedpur. The Red Miners have won three of the four previous meetings against ATK Mohun Bagan, while the Mariners secured three points on only one occasion.

The last encounter between these two teams was back in March, where Jamshedpur secured a 1-0 win. After a goalless first half, Ritwik Das scored the decisive goal in the 57th minute of the game.

Team News

Having beaten Bengaluru 1-0 away from home in the last match, Ferrando would ideally have preferred to not make any changes to his starting XI. Unfortunately for him, he will be forced to make at least one tweak.

Australian central defender Brendan Hamill has accumulated four yellow cards and will hence be unavailable for selection against the Red Miners. In his place, French defender Florentin Pogba could receive a rare opportunity to make his mark in India.

Boothroyd’s vase will be very different, as he will be looking to make quite a few changes to his team after a 0-1 defeat against Kerala Blasters. Given how he has performed so far, it will not be surprising at all if skipper Peter Hartley is dropped to the bench.

In his place, the English tactician could call up Pratik Chaudhari, which will also free up an overseas slot. Harry Sawyer could make use of it by replacing Farukh Choudhary, while in midfield, Phijam Singh is expected to make way for Jitendra Singh.

Predicted XIs

ATK Mohun Bagan (4-3-3): Vishal Kaith; Asish Rai, Pritam Kotal, Florentin Pogba, Subhasish Bose; Lenny Rodrigues, Carl McHugh, Hugo Boumous; Manvir Singh, Dimitri Petratos, Liston Colaco.

Jamshedpur (4-1-4-1): TP Rehenesh; Laldinliana Renthlei, Eli Sabia, Pratik Chaudhari, Ricky Lallawmawma; Jitendra Singh; Boris Singh, Jay Emmanuel Thomas, Harry Sawyer, Ritwik Das; Daniel Chima Chukwu.

Prediction

While Jamshedpur might enjoy an advantage on head-to-head statistics, ATK Mohun Bagan is miles ahead when it comes to the current form. Hence, we have predicted the Mariners to bag all three points from this match.
