Shakib Al Hasan, Shoriful Islam to be part of the first Test against Sri Lanka

Shakib Al Hasan last featured in the Test match was against Pakistan in December 2021 at his home ground

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has included Shoriful Islam and Shakib Al Hasan in their 16-member squad for the opening Test against Sri Lanka, starting from May 15.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the inclusion of Shakib Al Hasan and Shoriful Islam in the 16-member squad for the first Test match against Sri Lanka, beginning on May 15.

BCB had stated earlier that the latter might miss the Test series due to surgery but now the board is confident he will be fit on time. Shoriful  and Taskin Ahmed had returned from the South Africa tour after the first Test following the injuries.

Bangladesh Squad: Mominul Haque (Captain), Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Najmul Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton as, Yasir Ali Chowdhury, Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan, Ebadot Hossain, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Nurul Hasan, Rejaur Rahman Raja, Shohidul Islam, Shoriful Islam (subject to fitness)

“He (Shoriful) will have his surgery (for the non-cricketing injury) and it will take eight to 10 days to recover. We are expecting to send him on 25 or 26 and even if he does the operation after two days we are expecting him to be fit by May 10 if that is the case and he passes the fitness Test he will be in the squad for the Sri Lanka series and that is the reason we have kept him as available subject to injury,”

BCB cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus told on Sunday.

“Shoriful had an ankle injury in South Africa and he recovered from it,”

he said, adding that Taskin Ahmed’s chance of making it into the squad looks very dim as he is still having some pain from his shoulder injury and will be traveling to England on May 6 to assess his condition by the specialists.

Shakib, who missed the South Africa Tests and returned home after the ODI’s, has also become part of Bangladesh’s long format squad after a long time after being excluded from South Africa and New Zealand series.

The pacer Abu Jayed Rahi and Shadman Islam failed to get their spot while Rejaur Rahman, who is yet to wear the Bangladesh jersey, makes a comeback to the squad.

“We have kept Abu Jayed in the practice game. He is lacking a bit of pace and so we have not included him for the Test series but we are hopeful that he will make a comeback sooner than later by removing all his shortcomings,”

said the BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin.

“Shadman is dropped largely due to his form,”

he added.

Injury feared Bangladesh

On the day, Bangladesh announced their Test squad against Sri Lanka, two of their main pillars – Mehidy Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim – suffered small injuries while being part of the Dhaka Premier League.

Mushfiqur twisted his left ankle while fielding in the deep and Mehdiy hurt his index finger while taking a catch of Tamim Iqbal. Mushfiqur was given the ice treatment and Mehidy was taken to the nearby hospital.

The Sri Lankan team will arrive in Bangladesh on May 8 for two-match series that will be part of the 2021-2023 ICC World Test Championship. The touring party will have a two-day practice game at BKSP on 10-11.

BCB officials revealed that they have changed the practice venue from Chattogram to Dhaka as per the request from the visitors.

The first Test will be played at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chattogram starts on 15 May while the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Dhaka is from on May 23.
