Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals match number 34 raised an unsolved mystery

Rajasthan Royals edged past Delhi Capitals by 15 runs in a high-scoring thriller in match 34 of Indian Premier League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai that sparked a huge no-ball controversy in the last over.

Rajasthan Royals dominated Delhi Capitals by 15 runs in a high-scoring thriller in match 34 of Indian Premier League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai that sparked a huge no-ball controversy in the last over.

Needing 36 in the last two overs, Prasidh Krishna bowled a wicket maiden and left an impossible task for DC batters in the last over.

However, Rovman Powell smashed three huge sixes on the first three balls as Delhi required 18 off 3 balls. Meanwhile, the skipper Rishabh Pant made a controversial signal to call back their batters from the field over a no-ball controversy.

The controversy went out as soon as RR sealed a 15 runs victory over DC.

Chasing 223 for a victory, DC openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw started the innings quite well. Pant and Shaw made a decent partnership before RR struck again to remove Shaw.

DC’s hopes were dealt another blow as the skipper Rishabh Pant lost the ground on 44 runs. The match hung in an unstable situation which RR snatched at the end in the final over.

Earlier, batting first, Jos Buttler scored his third IPL century of the season as he charged on DC bowlers with an effortless knock to put on a huge target of 222/2 for RR in 20 overs.

Buttler’s (116) ton included 9 maximums and as many boundaries along with Devdutt Padikkal who scored (54) to add 155 for the first wicket stand.

After Buttler’s wicket, the skipper Sanju Samson gave a strong finish to the innings. RR batters took the better of DC bowlers throughout the game after being asked to bat first by the DC skipper at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday in the ongoing IPL 2022.

The no-ball controversy

McCoy bowled a high-waist delivery which Powell and DC players thought was a sure no-ball. The chaos began when DC assistant coach Shane Watson was seen talking with Pant before Amre came into the field to talk to umpires.

After the match, Watson said that the sort of behavior that was seen in the final over was not what Delhi Capitals stand for.

“Look, yeah it was very disappointing with what happened in that last over. We unfortunately were in that position in the game, we were not able to put things together for long enough in that game up until that point. In the end, what we at Delhi Capitals don’t stand for is what happened. The umpire’s decision, whether it is right or not, we have to accept. And someone running on the pitch, we cannot accept it. It is not good enough,”

said Watson while replying to an NDTV query during the virtual post-match press conference.

Talking about the incident after the game, Delhi Capitals skipper Pant said:

“I thought that no-ball could have been precious for us but it is not in my control. Yes, disappointed but can’t do much about it. Everyone was frustrated (in the dugout) that it was not even close, everyone on the ground saw that, I think the third umpire should have interfered and said it was a no-ball. It wasn’t right (sending Amre onto the field) but what happened with us is also not right, it happened in the heat of the moment. It was the fault of both sides and it is disappointing as we have seen some good umpiring in the tournament.”

Rajasthan Royals 222 for 2 (Buttler 116, Padikkal 54, Samson 46*) beat Delhi Capitals 207 for 8 (Pant 44, Prasidh 3-22) by 15 runs.
