Medvedev has reached the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships for the second consecutive time

Wimbledon has seen numerous underdogs winning the ultimate crown while several veterans fail on the green surface. Last year, Carlos Alcaraz stunned Novak Djokovic to win his maiden title at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. However, the Serb is still aiming for his eighth men’s singles Wimbledon title, which will help him equal Roger Federer’s record at the prestigious Championships.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz is chasing different glory as he’s keen to become the third player to win two consecutive Wimbledon titles. Thus, without further ado let’s take a look at the 2024 Wimbledon men’s singles quarter-final matches:

Jannik Sinner vs Daniil Medvedev

One of the hot favorites to win the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, Jannik Sinner faced Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. The Russian tennis star was on a five-match losing streak against Sinner on the ATP tour. Moreover, the two also faced each other in the final of the 2024 Australian Open, where Medvedev gave away a set lead of 2-0 and lost the match

Both Sinner and Medvedev held their serves forcing the first set into a tiebreak. Even in the tiebreak, both tennis stars were not ready to lose their serve but eventually, Sinner caught the lead and won the set 7-9. The Russian drew the first blood by breaking Sinner’s serve in the fourth game of the second set and taking a lead for the first time in the match.

Capitalizing on the lead, the 2021 US Open champion won the second set 6-4 and also the third set 7-6 (7-4). Medvedev was mainly aiming to secure his serve against the ATP World No. 1 but he failed to do so in the fourth set. Sinner was eager to win the fourth set to stay in the match and did that by winning 2-6. With the set score equalled at 2-2, the quarter-final fixture was forced into a decider.

The decider was going as planned for the ATP World No. 1 before he lost serve in the fourth game on the third break point. Interestingly, no significant fight was seen from any side in the last four games as Medvedev completed redemption over Sinner in an almost four-hour long five-set match 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Tommy Paul

When Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shocking defeat against Jack Draper in the second round of the Queen’s Club Championships, it seemed like the Spaniard would fail to put up a strong title defense at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. However, the defending champion has been playing well at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. He reached the quarterfinals with resounding victories over Frances Tiafoe and Ugo Humbert.

Meanwhile, American tennis star Tommy Paul took down the likes of Pedro Martinez, Otto Virtanen, Alexander Bublik, and Roberto Bautista Agut to secure a berth in the last eight. Paul was making his Wimbledon quarterfinals debut while Alcaraz had enough experience playing at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Last year, he ended Novak Djokovic’s 34-match unbeaten streak at the grass-court Grand Slam to win his maiden Wimbledon title.

Playing against the defending champion, Paul won the first set after closely avoiding a tiebreaker 5-7 in one hour and 13 minutes. Nevertheless, the 21-year-old crafted a spectacular comeback to win three consecutive sets and seal the victory in three hours and 14 minutes with the scoreline reading 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Carlos Alcaraz could become only the third tennis player to defend his title at Wimbledon in the 21st century after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic

Alcaraz’s unplayable topspin and precise drop shots are a strong reason behind his success on the green surface. In addition to that, the 21-year-old also has a strong forehand and he covers the whole court by approaching the net often. His playing style makes him a complete tennis star and a serious threat to other players.

Against the American tennis star, Alcaraz made 37 unforced errors and scored 36 winners. Meanwhile, Paul made a total of 51 unforced errors and scored only 21 winners. The young Spaniard is currently chasing new records at the championships and next up, he will face Russia’s Daniil Medvedev.

Alex de Minaur vs Novak Djokovic

Australia’s top-ranked tennis star Alex de Minaur withdrew from the 2024 Wimbledon Championships due to a hip injury he suffered during his fourth-round match. The Aussie faced Frenchman Authur Fils in the fourth round of the tournament.

Minaur played brilliantly and gave a strong performance against Fils; however, during the match point, he suffered a hip injury. He later revealed that he heard a popping sound from his hip.

Novak Djokovic underwent surgery on his right knee before the 2024 Wimbledon.

A few hours before the quarter-final match, the Australian tennis star announced his withdrawal from the grass-court Grand Slam. Minaur was making his quarterfinal debut at Wimbledon as he was going to face 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic for the fourth time in his professional career. Nevertheless, due to his withdrawal, Djokovic advanced to the semi-final of the Grand Slam, where he will face Lorenzo Musetti.

Taylor Fritz vs Lorenzo Musetti

Lorenzo Musetti reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final after he stunned Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the fourth round. On the other side, Taylor Fritz made a remarkable comeback against fourth seed Alexander Zverev to win the match in five sets. The American lost the initial two sets but still managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships for the second time in his career.

Meanwhile, Musetti ended as a runner-up at the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships after he lost against Paul. Facing another American in the quarter of the grass-court Grand Slam, Musetti came prepared. Fritz won the first set 3-6. However, the 22-year-old saved his serve and forced the second set into a tiebreak, where he emerged victorious.

Throughout the match, Musetti had a winning percentage of 76 on his first serve compared to Fritz, who had a success rate of 62%. The American also scored more winners than Musetti but made 55 unforced errors as compared to 39 of the Italian. In the decider, Musetti outplayed Fritz by a huge margin. With three aces and a break-point conversion rate of 100%, the 22-year-old came up with 11 winners in the fifth set.

Taylor Fritz failed to answer any of the groundstrokes and ended up losing the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. With the loss, the ATP World No. 14 now had a win-loss record of 0-4 in Grand Slams quarterfinals and Lorenzo Musetti will face seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic in the semi-final of the ongoing tournament.
