Alcaraz defends title against Djokovic, Krejcikova captures maiden crown: 2024 Wimbledon Final Roundup
The 2024 Wimbledon Championships came to an end with Carlos Alcaraz becoming the ninth ATP player in the Open Era to defend his title at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. After his loss in the second round of the Queen’s Club Championships in June, the 21-year-old was criticised for his performance but he defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets to win his fourth Grand Slam title.
Meanwhile, Barbora Krejcikova won her second Major title beating two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini in a three-set thriller. Apart from the singles, dramatic results unfolded in the doubles events too. Thus, without further ado, let’s take a look at the 2024 Wimbledon final matches:
Men’s Singles
Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz took down seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic to defend his crown at the All England Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday. The two tennis stars played a replay of last year’s final, which was a five-set marathon. However, this time, Alcaraz was in a hurry as he sealed the victory 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to win the championship match in only two hours and 27 minutes.
Djokovic, who was chasing Roger Federer’s record of eight men’s singles Wimbledon titles, fell short for the second consecutive year in the final. Alcaraz exhibited his elite mentality against the 24-time Grand Slam champion to put up a spectacle at the Centre Court. Talking about the stats, the 21-year-old Spaniard scored 42 winners and made 24 unforced errors. Meanwhile, Djokovic only had 26 winners and made 25 unforced errors.
Alcaraz broke Djokovic’s serve five times and dominated the match dramatically in the initial two sets. In addition to that, the 21-year-old also has a success percentage of 73% compared to Djokovic with 51. With the commendable win, the Spanish tennis star has become the third youngest player in Wimbledon history after Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg to defend the title at Wimbledon.
Moreover, Alcaraz has also become only the second male tennis player after Swiss legend Roger Federer to win his first four Grand Slam Finals in the Open Era. The 21-year-old is also only the sixth ATP star to complete a Channel Slam in the Open Era. The two-time Wimbledon champion has already leapfrogged the records of Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka, who were the only two players to win multiple Grand Slam titles during the ‘Big Three’ Era.
Women’s Singles
Jasmine Paolini vs Barbora Krejcikova
Italian tennis star Jasmine Paolini faced Czechia’s Barbora Krejcikova in the final of the women’s singles event at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
In the first set, Paolini was struggling to make ends meet against Krejcikova’s power. Eventually, she lost the first set 6-2 in 36 minutes. The 28-year-old took 37 minutes to make a return and win the second set with an identical scoreline. Paolini, who made a memorable comeback against Vekic in the last match, was expected to make a similar effort to win her maiden Wimbledon title.
However, Krejcikova’s experience of winning a Grand Slam helped her prevail in the three-set thriller. The Italian tennis star lost her serve in the seventh game of the set. Consequently, the Czech tennis star recorded the victory on her third championship point. With the win, Krejcikova became only the second active WTA tennis star with singles Wimbledon and Roland Garros titles after Simona Halep.
With the win, Krejcikova took a huge leap of 22 spots to become the new WTA World No. 10. Meanwhile, Paolini overtook Jessica Pegula and Marketa Vondrousova to take the fifth spot in the rankings. The 2023 Wimbledon champion, Vondrousova, who lost in the first round, has gone down by 12 spots, currently ranked 18.
Men’s Doubles
Max Purcell & Jordan Thompson vs Harri Heliovaara & Henry Patten
The final of the men’s doubles event at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships turned out to be an absolute spectacle for all tennis enthusiasts. The Australian pair of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson won the first set via tiebreak 6-7 (7-9).
However, the unseeded duo of Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten came up with a solid plan. They decided to force the match more into the nets because the Aussie pair was good with their winners. Looking at the stats, Purcell and Thompson scored 15 aces and 28 winners, making only five unforced errors.
Meanwhile, Heliovaara and Patten scored only two aces and nine winners, making five unforced errors. They also saved five break points. Throughout the match, the serve wasn’t broken by any pair even once. The second set, which was also forced into a tiebreaker, was won by the British-Finnish pair to make the score equal.
The decider also turned out to be a thriller as both pairs were not ready to drop a service game. Again, with 6-6 on the scoreboard, a tiebreaker was played for the third time in the same match. Heliovaara and Patten, who stunned Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli, Marcelo Arevalo & Mate Pavic, and Micheal Venus & Neal Skupski ended their memorable campaign with the prestigious Wimbledon title with a scoreline of 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (11-9).
Women’s Doubles
Taylor Townsend & Katerina Siniakova vs Gabriela Dabrowski & Erin Routliffe
Taylor Townsend & Katerina Siniakova pulled a huge upset by defeating the top seed pair of Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei in the semifinals in three sets. Meanwhile, Gabriela Dabrowski & Erin Routliffe handed a straight-set defeat to seventh seed Desirae Krawczyk and Caroline Dolehide.
Much like the men’s doubles final, the women’s final also turned out to be a close contest. Both pairs won 11 games and dropped their service once. However, Townsend & Siniakova smashed five aces and scored 14 winners while Dabrowski & Routliffe scored only three winners, scoring one ace and made three double faults. They also had three more unforced errors as compared to Townsend & Siniakova, who fumbled three times.
After two hours and six minutes of intense action, Townsend & Siniakova won the women’s doubles Wimbledon title with the scoreline reading 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-1). Siniakova also won the 2024 French Open women’s doubles event alongside another American, Coco Gauff after defeating the Italian pair of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
