The Champions League is traditionally followed by a less prestigious but no less spectacular tournament, the Europa League.

On the night of April 28, European football fans will be watching a heated UEFA Europa League semi-final between London’s West Ham and Frankfurt’s Eintracht. Both teams have reached the semi-finals of the European competition for the first time in a long time. It’s a fairly unexpected occurrence, but the teams show some pretty interesting football and clearly deserve to be in this stage of the tournament. Which of the participants in the upcoming semi-final will make it to the final of the tournament? The upcoming meeting will show.

Parimatchnews will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

West Ham News & Current Form:

West Ham started the 2021\2022 EPL campaign very brightly and actively competed for the top 4, however, started to give up and lose ground in the course of the season. In the last five games in the Premier League, the club has only managed to win one – defeating relegation-threatened Everton (2-1) under ex-Chelsea Frank Lampard. There was also a 1-1 draw with Burnley and defeats in all other encounters.

In the English Premier League, after 34 rounds, they are seventh in the standings trailing 6th-placed Man Utd by two points.

The team did well in domestic cups. The EFL Cup ended for the Ironmen at the quarter-final stage, where they lost to Tottenham 2-1. Before that, though, they knocked Manchester United and Manchester City out of the tournament. The FA Cup, on the other hand, ended in the fifth round, with the Hammers suffering a 1-3 fiasco against Southampton.

On the other hand, the results are due to the fact that the Hammers have put all their energies into their Europa League quest. It is noteworthy that they reached the semi-finals of the European competitions for the first time since the twentieth century. At the previous stage of the competition, they dominated the French side Lyon (4-1 on aggregate).

In the first leg, David Moyes’s side looked the worse side but managed to open the scoring in the 52nd minute. The opposition pressed, created chances and clawed away a 1-1 draw. But in the return leg, the English seized the initiative and crushed the French 3-0. One of the goals was scored by the team-star Declan Rice.

The defensive midfielder delighted the supporters with his ability to start attacks, devalue the efforts of the opponents’ attackers and more. The management of the London club understands that it will not be possible to retain such a quality player for long, but they plan to keep him in the upcoming summer transfer window. The midfielder’s contract is set to expire in 2024.

Injured: Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma, Issa Diop.

Eintracht Frankfurt News & Current Form:

Eintracht, for their part, sit ninth in the Bundesliga. Over the last five games, Eintracht have not achieved a single victory, with three draws – with RB Leipzig (0-0), Greuter Fürth (0-0) and Hoffenheim (2-2). The defeats during this period came against Freiburg (1-2) and Union Berlin (0-2).

Like West Ham, the team from Frankfurt am Main threw everything they had into succeeding in the Europa League. As a result, they beat a powerful Catalan side, Barcelona (4-3 on aggregate), in the previous leg. In both encounters, the players showed terrific fervour and attacked sharply. Miraculously, the opponents conceded no more than that.

The supporters had no small part in this success. The return leg at the Camp Nou saw some 30,000 German fans travelling out to support their beloved club. The players have repaid them with a victory. This is where Barça’s management have to be asking themselves. There is no doubt that the German side are highly motivated and will definitely fight for the title to the very end.

However, Oliver Glasner’s side have one negative trait – a lack of defensive fortitude. They have conceded 44 goals in 31 meetings in the German championship and 11 in 10 meetings in the Europa League. But there are no problems with productivity: they have scored 42 in Germany and 17 goals in UEL respectively.

Injured: Diant Ramaj. Doubtful: Christopher Lenz. Suspended: Evan Ndicka, Kristijan Jakic.

What has been said before the match:

David Moyes, West Ham manager:

“I think it’s really special that two teams with a history are back together. I know some of the players from the [1976 Cup Winners’ Cup] semi-final were here the other day. They’re a big name in German football with incredible support. I’ve been to a couple of games at Frankfurt before and they’ve always had a really big support.”

“We did a really good job in the group. The whole squad did a brilliant job. And then we’ve had two huge ties. We’re in a semi-final. You would always like the second leg at home, but we have to deal with that, and I think we’re in a good place and have to challenge to get to the final.”

Oliver Glasner, Frankfurt coach:

“West Ham are very compact. They are physically very strong, prefer a quick game into the top and are enormously dangerous from set pieces. It’s going to be a difficult game, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

“The greatest motivation is that we are in the semi-finals of a European competition. That’s something extraordinary for a coach, for a player, for a club. We feel this peculiarity.”

West Ham vs Eintracht Frankfurt Prediction:

The national leagues are now of secondary importance to both clubs. Of course, the Hammers can still qualify for the Europa League through EPL standings, but should that be a priority when there are only two stages left in this competition to win the trophy and qualify for the Champions League next season? And on its own, a Europa League triumph would be of great value for a team of this calibre. As for the development of the first leg, we expect a hard-fought game and a win for the Londoners. Barcelona lost to Eintracht mainly because of their poor defensive play at the Camp Nou. West Ham are much more attentive and rigorous at the back and are certain to avoid the mistakes of the declining Catalans. The Hammers themselves are also unlikely to score much at the moment.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say: West Ham to win and the match total less than 3.5 – Yes.
