PL Weekend Roundup: Tottenham thrashes Leeds 4-0, Manchester United drop points against Watford
The race for the Premier League is heating up as we are en route to the business end of the tournament and the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool allowed other teams like Manchester City to take advantage in the league.
Everton vs Manchester City
League leaders Manchester City was up against 17th place Everton at Goodison Park. Despite having an upper hand over their opponents for the majority of the fixture, the Blues had to wait until the final ten minutes of the game as Foden converted a lobbed cross from Silva past Pickford to score the winner for his side. With the win over their opponents, City is now 6 points ahead of Liverpool, with a one-game disadvantage.
Brentford vs Newcastle United
Newcastle United was against the challenge of Brentford in an away fixture, as the club found their fifth win this season, with a 2-0 victory over the hosts. Brentford was down to ten men early in the game after Josh Dasilva was shown red just eleven minutes into the contest.
The visitors capitalized on their man advantage with Joelinton scoring the opening goal in the 33rd minute courtesy of a cross from Fraser. Willock added on to the lead just before the break in the 44th minute to put his side 2-0 on the scoresheet. Brentford tried their best to get the scores leveled but were shut down by Newcastle.
Leeds United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs got back on track with a 4-0 win over Leeds United as the team still has the chance to finish in the top four of the standings. Doherty, Kuluseveski, Kane, and Son all registered their name on the scoresheet with goals against their opponent.
Antonio Conte will surely be happy with the performance from his side. On the other hand, things aren’t looking good for Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds is now 16th on the points table and hasn’t found a win in their last five games. If news outlets are to be believed, the manager could very well be out of the club before their upcoming fixture.
West Ham United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
The Hammers were up against the Wolves in the only Premier League fixture on Sunday. Both the sides have been brilliant this season with the Hammers currently in the race for a top-four finish.
West Ham kept their hopes alive with a win over their opponents in a home fixture with the help of a goal from Souchek in the 59th minute. Both the sides tussled in the remaining minutes but could not find another goal as the Hammers picked up an important win over their opponents.
Manchester United vs Watford
The disappointment was evident on Ronaldo’s face after he failed to score against Watford
Things are not looking good for Manchester United this season, as their chances to finish in the top four in the league standings might just go up in smoke. United was up against Watford at Old Trafford but the home team played a goalless draw against their opponents at the end of the final whistle.
United had 22 shots in the contest and could keep just 2 of them on target. With Arsenal just two points behind them and a three-game advantage in their hands, the Red Devils are very likely to lose out on a UEFA Champions League qualification for next season.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Aston Villa
Aston Villa was able to cruise past Brighton with a 0-2 win over their opponents in an away fixture courtesy of two brilliant goals from Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins.
Cash put his team ahead in the game with a stunning goal in the 17th minute as he took advantage of a free ball and smashed it into the net with a volley. Watkins put his side up by 0-2 in the 68th minute as he managed to convert Mings’ long ball past Sanchez to give his side the win.
Southampton vs Norwich City
Southampton clashes against Norwich City in a home fixture as the side managed to snuggle a 2-0 win over their opponents with the help of goals from Che Adams and Oriol Romeu.
On the other hand, things are getting harder for Norwich as the side lost their 17th match in the ongoing PL season. The club is stagnating at the bottom of the league table with just 17 points and is likely to end up in relegation at the end of the season if they do not manage to reverse their fortunes.
Crystal Palace vs Burnley
Burnley managed to hold off Crystal Palace to a 1-1 draw in an away fixture as the side still has a chance to make out of the relegation this season. Palace opened their tally with Schlupp’s goal in the ninth minute to give his side the early advantage.
The team managed to retain their lead in the first half but were greeted with an ‘own goal’ just a minute into the second half from Milivojevic as the away side managed to level the scores. Both teams could not find the deciding goal as the match ended in a draw.
