Mohun Bagan lifts the winning trophy for the I-League 2019-20 after seven months
The much-awaited moment for the Mohun Bagan finally arrived on Sunday when the team was handed over the winning trophy for the I-League 2019-20. The Mariners celebrated by putting the trophy in an open jeep and passed through different places on its way to Mohun Bagan Athletic Club.

The Mohun Bagan received the I-League winning trophy after seven months. The club won the Hero I-League a few months back, but the trophy presentation was held back due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. The club was waiting for this moment for months, which finally arrived on Sunday. They were handed the champions trophy at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kolkata. I-League CEO Sunando Dhar presented the trophy to the players and the coaches in front of Swapan Sadhan Bose, club president, and Aroop Biswas, Sports Minister of West Bengal.
The winning team head coach Kibu Vicuna congratulated the team on their special day and expressed his delight. Vicuna was not able to attend the event due to prevailing Covid-19 conditions, he said in a video message. Vicuna is the new head coach of Kerala Blasters FC. Deputy Ranjan Chowdhury defender Dhanchandra Singh and the staff members were there to celebrate the occasion.
PM Narendra Modi appreciated the club’s efforts in winning the I-League 2019-20. PM congratulated the players, team staff, and the fans and shared his delight with a tweet.
Dhar referred to the club as the “best brand of football” to win the Hero I-League in 2019-20. He congratulated the century-old club on their path-breaking winning and requested to strengthen the academy so that more youngsters get the best opportunities.
Mohun Bagan secured 39 points and charted on the top of the points table. They were 16 points ahead of the second-placed club, East Bengal, and won the I-League 2019-20. It was Mohun Bagan’s second I-League win.
