Liverpool will host Crystal Palace in the English Premier League second-tour match at the Anfield Stadium. The fixture will take place on August 16, beginning at 00:30 IST.

Parimatchnews will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Liverpool News & Current Form:

Liverpool have had a mixed start to the season, winning the FA Super Cup against Manchester City 3-1 on the one hand, and failing to win their opening league game on the other.

Who would have thought that Jurgen Klopp’s side would slip up in their opening game, and not against Chelsea or Arsenal but against the humble Fulham, promoted from the Championship. Realistically, the Reds were lucky to get any points at Craven Cottage as they were loosing twice before the 80th minute, only managing to make it 2-2 in the end. The Merseysiders though created many chances with xG over 3, but the scoreline is here and this is a terrible news, such a points loss could play its part in the title race sooner or later.

The good news is that newcomer Darwin Nunez has produced a decent performance, scoring a goal and providing an assist, even though he only came on as a substitute in the 51st minute. And the main star Mohamed Salah seems to be in good form now as he managed to score in both of his team’s opening games. The most important thing at the moment, to ‘sharpen the settings’ of the defensive line – well, there are certain questions on the eve of the match as it was reported that Joel Matip may miss the upcoming game against the Eagles. In addition, Thiago Alcantara got injured, and the issue with the central midfielders again became relevant. Thus: eight players are now injured and will not be able to play in upcoming encounters.

One thing is clear now, given the momentum of the Citizens’ point gain – mistakes are not just unacceptable, but unthinkable for Liverpool. They are desperate for three points against Crystal Palace and, thankfully, the statistics show that it is almost in the bag: in 16 games against the Eagles in the Klopp era, the Merseysiders have won 14 times. Moreover, they have won the last six meetings very convincingly with the aggregate score 21-1).

Crystal Palace News & Current Form:

It is tough for Patrick Vieira: his boys have to face Arsenal, Liverpool and City in the beginning of the new campaign. Quite a tough schedule to be fair. The first test ended in a 0-2 defeat, with the Cannoneers scoring two goals from two shots on target. The Eagles, in turn, simply couldn’t convert their chances although atacking the most part of the match – that’s what separates the top clubs from the mid-tablers. And there was a chronic lack of luck, with Marc Guéhi’s own goal drawing the line in the London derby.

The Glaziers have been a stalwart inhabitant of the middle of the EPL table for several seasons now, with no risk of relegation and no chance of clawing their way into the Eurocups. This season, the Eagles should probably not be survival fighters either, but it will be difficult for them to fight for anything serious. The main thing after the first three toughest matches is to maintain the optimistic thinking and not to put their heads down. After such a hardening stretch it will be possible to quietly begin to add to their account in battles against similar or weaker opponents.

Like Liverpool, the Londoners also have a lot of personnel losses, five players will not be able to help the team.

What has been said before the match:

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpoll gaffer:

“We had a slow start and I didn’t like it at all. I saw the attitude to fight back but that is a different thing. We took too long to switch on. We did not play a good game and still could have scored more goals. We had our moments.”

“This is the start of the season, you cannot play 64 games (last season), fight through it and start quickly every time. It’s completely different now as it’s the start of the season. We have to be ready.

“We need to be awake before it starts. I don’t like that you find one thing in the stats and tell me it as though it’s the truth, it’s not. It could be a warning sign, for sure. It felt like a loss and that’s how it felt when we left the stadium. But we got a point. That is the good news. Now we go.”

Patrick Viera, the Palace gaffer:

“It was the first game of the season. The team may not be at their best but for ourselves it’ll be a different Liverpool team. We’ve improved from the last 10 days of training, maybe it’s the same for them.”

“It’s difficult to find a better atmosphere (than Anfield). The players are really excited, it’s a fantastic stadium and atmosphere. We want to enjoy ourselves. It will be challenging but we can make it challenging for them. Last year we had some good opportunities to score goals, at home we created those situations again. “We have to be brave and, with the strength we have, try to play that game with personality. We will try to perform our best.”

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

Liverpool must surely be angry after their sensitive loss of points at the Craven Cottage. Besides, Manchester City are off to a perfect start in the EPL, and Klopp and co. will certainly want to avoid giving Guardiola’s side a serious handicap right away. Besides, it’s the first home game of the season.

After the match against Fulham, Klopp spoke about the biggest mistake – it took Liverpool too long to get into the game and this allowed the opponents to take the lead. Considering what a motivator the German is, there will be no such blunder in the game against Crystal Palace.

Given the daunting atmosphere at Anfield, the Reds are certain to take control of the match from the very first minute and crush their opponents with movement and aggression, as they have done in all recent meetings between the teams. In the second half, it will be a matter of technique to extend the lead to a big one.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say: Liverpool to win with the individual total over 2 goals – Yes.
