Bengaluru signs Iranian midfielder Iman Basafa
After signing for the Blues, Basafa said,
“I’m very happy to join Bengaluru FC and to come to a country like India where football is growing very fast. I’m excited for what lies ahead, for myself and for our team, and I hope to be able to contribute. BFC is a champion team with a good mentality, and I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and working hard for the season.”
Iman Basafa has spent the entirety of his footballing career in Iran switching between the second division and the first division of the Iranian football league pyramid before Bengaluru came calling for the services of the defensive midfielder.
After making his senior debut for Shardhari Arak, Basafa moved to Esteghlal before signing for Fajr Sepasi in 2015. After spending two seasons with Fajr Sepasi where he enjoyed his best goalscoring season with 7 goals in the 2016-17 season, the midfielder moved to Malavan for a brief spell.
Since 2017, Basafa has spent a solitary season at four different clubs namely Malavan, Aluminium Arak, Pars Jonoubi, and Machine Sazi before taking a decision to travel to India and play in the ISL.
According to several reports, Basafa has been signed as a replacement for Erik Paartalu who remains contracted with the club but is no longer a part of the plans at the club ahead of the 2021-22 ISL season.
The Bengaluru head coach Marco Pezzaiuoli praised the club’s latest signing and feels that the Iranian midfielder would add leadership and a physical presence in the Blues midfield.
“Iman is a player who is comfortable in different positions in the midfield. He’s someone who has a physical presence, is good with his head, and possesses the traits of a leader. He is also someone who likes to shoot from distance. With his experience and presence, he will strengthen the squad and we look forward to welcoming him soon.”
