The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday named a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against West Indies, which starts on July 22.

Rohit Sharma and senior players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammad Shami, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the 50-over format.

Shikhar Dawan will lead India in the three-match ODI series and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been named as the vice-captain.

Kohli, who was known for his blistering batting performance has failed to regain his form. After dropping out on the home series against Proteas, the former captain could only manage to score just 32 runs in the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston

The left-handed opener batter Dhawan had previously led the Indian side in three ODIs last year against Sri Lanka when other senior players were engaged with the Test side in England. As in that series, he’ll have Ruturaj Gaikwad as a potential opening batter with India also including Shubman Gill into the ODI side for the first time since the tour of Australia in December 2020.

Sanju Samson returns to the squad replacing Pant as the second wicketkeeper while pacer Arshdeep Singh, included for the ODIs against England, keeps his place. Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel along with all-rounder Deepak Hooda, are the spinners in the squad.

India’s tour of the West Indies and USA starts with the ODI leg in Trinidad starting July 22. They will hence play five T20Is against the two-time World Champions, in Trinidad, St Kitts, and Lauderhill with the visit getting done with the two T20Is in the USA on August 6 and 7.

Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Ravindra Jadeja (vice-captain), Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohd Siraj, Arshdeep Singh.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked the squad for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies to be played at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad,”

BCCI said in its official release.
