Sachin Tendulkar reveals that the Kapil Dev-led Indian team winning the 83’s World Cup gave him the spark and desire to win this trophy someday for India.

Remembering India’s victory in the 83’s Cricket World Cup, the legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar said that the Kapil Dev -led team’s victory in the mega event sparked him a desire to win the trophy for his country someday.

Today, Indians are celebrating the completion of the maiden World Cup victory under the leadership of the veteran all-rounder Kapil Dev.

“Some moments in life inspire you & make your dream. On this day in 1983, we won the World Cup for the first time. I knew right then, that’s what I wanted to do too!,”

tweeted Sachin.

In 1983, the World Cup final was played between India and West Indies and the latter won the toss and opted to bowl first.

The Kapil Dev-led India were restricted to just 183 runs as Andy Roberts took three wickets while Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, and Larry Gomes picked up two wickets each.

Defending the total of 183 was a huge task in the final. Indians did a fine job while checking on the run flow of West Indies, and restricted the side to 57/3.

Soon after that, the Caribbean’s were reduced to 76/6 and India became the favorite to lift the title. Mohinder Amarnath took the final wicket of the match to give India their maiden title of the World Cup.

West Indies were bowled out for 140 in the final and India won the match by 43 runs.

Kapil Dev lifting the trophy from the balcony of Lord’s Cricket Ground is still one of the cherishing memories for Indian fans.

Mohinder Amarnath was awarded “Man of the match” in the final as he scored 26 runs with the bat and he was phenomenal with the ball as well after picking up three wickets.

West Indies are the two-times World Champions, their first victory came in 1975 and the second one took place in the next event in 1979 and they ended up being runners-up in the 1983 and 2011 World Cup.
