The hosts gave a strong statement in the third and final ODI at Edgbaston after beating Pakistan in a record chase at Edgbaston. The effort from England in the final ODI made Babar Azam’s career-best 158 in vain.
England won the toss in the last and final ODI match and decided to bowl first. Pakistan didn’t start their innings very well.
Saqib Mahmood took the first wicket and sent the Fakhar Zaman to the pavilion when the ball directly goes to the first slip. Saqib Mahmood was already in good touch in the last two matches and also played a major role in the winning of these two matches.
After the first wicket, Babar and Imam ul Haq try to stay on the pitch and takes their side out from that critical situation. Both of them played very well and put a solid partnership.
But their partnership didn’t go long when Patt Parkinson bowled Imam after he misjudged the ball and it went straight into the stumps.
But Babar stays on the pitch with the traditional ones and two’s along with a couple of shots that worries England. Then Mohammad Rizwan and Babar put a huge partnership that helps a lot of Pakistan to put a great total on the scoreboard.
Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam top-scored with an ODI best 158. Babar and Rizwan shared a third-wicket partnership of 179 and also this is the highest wicket partnership for Pakistan against England in ODI.
But this partnership broke down in the 46th over when Rizwan lost his wicket. Before his wicket, Pakistan was 292-2. After that wicket, Pakistan lost seven wickets in just 32 runs. Pakistan didn’t stand another partnership after Rizwan’s wicket.
After 50 over’s, Pakistan was total 331-9.
England started the inning’s very well. In the first over, Shaheen Afridi paid a cost by giving 16 runs. On the first ball of the next over Hassan Ali took a wicket of Dawid Malan and sent him back to the pavilion.
Pakistan took the second wicket on the 6th over of the innings when Haris Rauf came to deliver his first over.
Pakistan goes very well and takes continuous wickets. England’s skipper, Ben Stokes was also sent back onto 32 runs and England’s batsman couldn’t stand a big partnership.
But James Vince and Lewis Gregory didn’t give up and stand a very good partnership and both of them took the responsibility to win this match for their team.
James Vince’s Maiden ODI century and Lewis Gregory made 77 as England beat Pakistan by three wickets
England played with its all-new squad who proved their skills, especially Saqib Mehmood and Phil Salt.
By this win, the brand new England clean sweep Pakistan.
“Throughout the series the efforts have been fantastic, massive thanks to all players and coaches for making this happen, we have all managed to put through. The normal person is not here but credit to Eoin, and silvers, and Trevor Bayliss, for the way they have to lead the team over the last six years,”
said Stokes.
Play fearless cricket, like Phil Salt at the top. The most pleasing thing is no one is affected by the situation and had a great time in front of the Edgbaston crowd. Everyone called up has seriously put their hand up,”
he said.
“We got off to a quick start so the rate wasn’t out of control, and Lewy got important boundaries at the right time. We took our time to knock it around. Pleasing to contribute, this time last week didn’t expect this opportunity,”
Vince said.
Brief scores: Pakistan 331/9 in 50 overs (Babar Azam 158, Mohammad Rizwan 78; Brydon Carse 5-61) lost to England 332/7 in 48 overs (James Vince 102, Lewis Gregory 77; Haris Rauf 4-65) by 3 wickets.
