Chris Woakes, Dawid Malan join other England players in pulling out

Chris Woakes plays for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League tournament

Several England players have withdrawn from the upcoming second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 tournament, to be played from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). After Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes were ruled out of the tournament, it has been revealed that wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Dawid Malan will be the other players who will not be taking part in IPL 2021 second leg.

It has been reported that the fear of being away from home for more than four months, which includes a T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE followed by a tour to Australia for the Ashes 2021–22, has forced several of England’s all format players to remain home for a while before they embark on tough challenges ahead. The T20 World Cup 2021 will be held in the UAE itself, a few days after the conclusion of the second leg of IPL 2021.

South Africa opening batsman Aiden Markram will be replacing Dawid Malan at Punjab Kings whereas the explosive Caribbean batsman Sherfane Rutherford has been named the replacement of Bairstow at Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Bairstow, Woakes, Malan and Butler have all been named in the England side for the T20 World Cup and are expected to play a crucial role in England’s campaign in the Ashes later on in the year. Among these players, Buttler and Woakes both have young families with the former recently having his second child in the form of a baby girl.

A report in the ESPNcricinfo revealed that other England players in Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Eoin Morgan, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, George Garton, Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone are expected to take part in the upcoming second leg of IPL 2021.
