Joël Matip is a Cameroonian footballer, defender(centre-back), born on August 8, 1991 in Bochum, Germany.
Joel began his football career in 1994 in the youth team of the Weitmar 45 club, where he played until 1997, before moving to Bochum. In 2000 Matip joined the Schalke 04 youth team.
In the 2009/2010 season, the new head coach of Schalke 04, Felix Magath, brought Matip to the main team, and in November he made an impressive debut in the main squad against Bayern – scoring the only goal for Schalke that brought the team a draw, named the best player of the match. In total, in his debut season, Joel entered the field 20 times in the depths of midfield.
In the same 2009, Joel decided to play for the Cameroon national team, and made his debut for the country in a friendly match against Italy. For Cameroon, he played at the World Championships in 2010 and 2014.
In seven seasons at Schalke, Matip has firmly established himself in the defense of the German team and has recorded more than 200 matches in all tournaments. With the Pitmen, the defender won the German Cup and the German Super Cup in 2011.
In February 2016, it was announced that Matip would transfer to Liverpool at the end of the season and the expiration of his contract with Schalke as a free agent. On July 1, Matip officially became the Reds’ player.
