UEFA Player and Coach of the Year nominees announced: revealing shortlists

UEFA has announced today the top three contenders for the Player of the Year award.

Kevin De Bruyne played a key role in his club success – with his help, Man City won their 3rd league title in 4 seasons, N’Golo Kante was instrumental to the Blues’ 2020/21 campaign – the real stopper for even top-tier forwards. And Chelsea’s other star player, Jorginho, had a terrific season: he became the tenth player in history to win the UCL and European Championship in the same year.

The top three finalists were voted on by a total of 24 coaches from UEFA EURO 2020 teams, 80 coaches of clubs that qualified for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League group stage last season. The jury also included 55 journalists from each national association affiliated with UEFA.

Jury members chose their top three players, with the first receiving five points, the second – three and the third – one point. Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own team.

The remaining players from the list are as follows:

UEFA also announced the top three contenders for the 2020/21 Best Coach award: Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), Roberto Mancini (Italy) and Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea) are nominated.

Mancini led Italy to victory at UEFA EURO 2020, Tuchel’s Chelsea won the Champions League, and Guardiola led Man City to their first-ever UEFA Champions League final, as well as winning the English Premier League and the League Cup.

  • The names of the best coach, the best player, as well as other individual awards, will be announced at the UCL group stage draw in Istanbul on 26 August.
