Will Newcastle, last season's favourites of the neutral fans, manage to beat Son Heung-min and his formidable team to enter the Eurocup zone?

Newcastle United FC will host Tottenham Hotspur FC in the English Premier League 33rd-round match at the St James’ Park Stadium. The fixture will take place on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 17:00 IST.

Parimatch News will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Newcastle United News & Current Form:

Another round of the Premier League, another clash between two teams with prominent names, strong lineups, but different positions and perspectives: Newcastle against Tottenham.

This match against the Spurs is crucial and defining for the team: a victory against a direct competitor would narrow the gap to the UEFA Champions League zone to just ten points. The hosts have a relatively favorable schedule considering the tournament standings of their opponents, whereas the Londoners will have to face Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC, Liverpool FC, and Manchester City FC.

Having secured a top-4 finish last season, the Magpies haven’t performed as successfully in the current campaign, currently occupying the eighth spot in the Premier League table. However, under Eddie Howe’s guidance, they still vie for a spot in European competitions (trailing sixth-placed Manchester United FC by only 2 points), especially with their recent performances in April bringing joy to the fans.

Enduring a weak stretch earlier in the season, Newcastle have gradually found their form, losing only 2 out of their last 10 Premier League matches. At home, the Magpies have scored 39 goals in 16 matches, with only Aston Villa FC (40) and Liverpool (43) boasting more.

Loses against Chelsea and Manchester City can be justified by the quality of the opposition. As for the draw, it occurred in a home match against Everton FC, who are currently fighting to avoid relegation in the top division. It’s important to note that overall, the hosts appeared quite passive, hence the draw seemed like a logical outcome.

Noteworthy are the two victories: the incredibly epic comeback against West Ham United FC (4:3), when they were trailing 1:3 before the end of the game, and the pragmatic win against the Cottagers in the previous round.

Eddie Howe has undertaken significant work to restore the black-and-white team to their form from the previous season. The coach had to redefine roles as many key players either regressed or found themselves sidelined due to injuries.

Moreover, the coach has emphasized more on defense. Following injuries to some defenders and their main goalkeeper, Nick Pope, the Magpies have been conceding goals frequently. Howe has improved the defense, but Martin Dubravka still has a lot of work to do: in the last 17 Premier League matches, he made 67 saves but conceded 34 goals.

With Callum Wilson sidelined due to injury, Alexander Isak has emerged as one of the new leaders of the team. Having received limited playing time previously, the Swedish forward has scored eight goals and provided one assist in the last 10 matches in the English championship. Additionally, prior to a recent away match against Fulham FC, someone broke into his house, which is not the first incident where Premier League players’ homes have been targeted by burglars before away matches.

The game itself was a tough one: Isak didn’t score, and Newcastle trailed in possession by almost twice, although both teams had 10 shots on target. The late goal by Bruno Guimaraes secured the victory for Eddie Howe’s team at Craven Cottage. For the Brazilian, this goal marked his thirteenth in the Premier League, and in all the matches where the midfielder scored, the Magpies emerged victorious.

Furthermore, Guimaraes once again proved himself to be a key player for modern-day Newcastle. Since his transfer from French club Olympique Lyonnais, the Brazilian has played in 100 out of the total 107 matches played by the Black and Whites since then. With him in the lineup, the English team scores significantly more goals, concedes fewer, and consequently earns more points — on average, three times more than without him.

Alexander Isak of Newcastle United FC has scored 8 goals in the last 10 games

This weekend, Newcastle will be without several players. The injured list includes Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento, Joelinton, Miguel Almiron, and Callum Wilson, as well as reserve defender Jamaal Lascelles and promising 17-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley. Additionally, there’s uncertainty regarding the participation of defenders Lewis Hall and Matt Targett, and midfielder Sandro Tonali is suspended.

Guimaraes, who scored against the Cottagers last week, will once again start alongside Elliot Anderson, while Anthony Gordon and Isak will take their places in the attacking line. Fabian Schär and Dan Burn will again be tasked with cementing the hosts’ defense, while Sean Longstaff will be responsible for creativity on the left flank of midfield.

Tottenham Hotspur News & Current Form:

While the battles rage on in the Champions League quarter-finals, Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou strive to secure a spot for themselves in the next season. However, the coach emphasizes that participation in the UCL, while prestigious, does not offer any bonuses for the team in subsequent tournaments.

In their previous encounter, the Spurs triumphed over the European powerhouse of half a century ago, Nottingham Forest FC, with a score of 3:1. Postecoglou’s men had to work hard, as they went into halftime tied after Chris Wood responded to a goal by Murillo. The head coach noted that his team lost control of the game after Wood’s equalizer.

The Trees dominated in the second part of the first half and would likely have further success if not for the substitutions made by the Australian at halftime. The introduction of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur for Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr allowed Tottenham to regain control in midfield and added productivity to their attack. However, Spurs’ away form hasn’t been as promising, with only one win in their last six games.

Considering their solid defense and attack, the team has every chance of securing a place in the Champions League. However, Postecoglou is still in search of quality and consistent performers, one Bentancur alone won’t suffice. Additionally, the team has many injured players, as highlighted in the Everton match, where 10 players were unavailable due to various medical reasons.

World Cup winner Richarlison playing for Tottenham Hotspur is currently injured

The Greco-Australian coach asserts that he needs players willing to compete for the club in any tournament, not solely focused on European competitions. Talk of the club’s chances for the championship title is purely mathematical at best. Nonetheless, Postecoglou’s charges can influence who ultimately claims the most coveted trophy in England with their results.

It’s worth noting that in the first round, Tottenham didn’t lose to any of their opponents, even defeating Liverpool with a scoreline of 2:1 in a match with controversial refereeing decisions. If Jurgen Klopp doesn’t seek revenge in the return fixture, the Londoners could effectively diminish Liverpool’s chances of victory.

Currently, the team occupies the 4th spot in the Premier League table and, with one game in hand, has amassed the same number of points as the trailing Aston Villa (60 points each). The players’ confidence is bolstered by the fact that they have conceded only once in the last six rounds, winning four times and drawing once.

An interesting fact: this season, Tottenham have scored 11 goals in the championship through the efforts of their defenders, which is the best performance in the Premier League tied with Arsenal. Due to injuries, key striker Richarlison (10 goals and 3 assists), backup goalkeeper Fraser Forster, as well as Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon, are absent from the away team’s squad.

Captain Heung-Min Son (15 goals and 9 assists) may lead the attack once again, while playmaker James Maddison (4 goals and 7 assists) will support him from midfield. Competing on the flanks are Brennan Johnson (5 goals and 7 assists), Dejan Kulusevski (6 goals and 3 assists), and Timo Werner (2 goals and 3 assists), while Bentancur, Hojbjerg, and Giovani Lo Celso will replace the injured players in the midfield.

In the current season, the future opponents met in December 2023. In the first round of the Premier League, Tottenham had no trouble against Newcastle, comfortably defeating their opponents 4:1 at home.

What has been said before the match:

Eddie Howe, coach of Newcastle, praised the team’s resilience in securing a recent victory:

“It wasn’t a great performance against Fulham, but we were dogged and determined. I thought it was a big step forward, not playing too well but finding a way to score and win the game. We haven’t been able to do that enough this season, to find a way to win games like that.”

“I admire Tottenham  tactically; I admire them physically. A lot of credit must go to Ange for the job he has done and the philosophy he has implemented. I think they have played very well this year.”

“The closest player to coming back would be Tino Livramento, he has not trained with the team but has been out on the grass. Lewis Hall has not trained at all this week, so he is a slight concern from last week. Other players are doing well in the background so I am hoping in the not-too-distant future we can get three or four back.”

“Joe has been to see another specialist to check on the progress of his achilles, which has been problematic for him. The feedback was positive. For Tottenham, I don’t think he will be available for us. We need to make sure the long-term prognosis for him is positive so he may need some rest.”

“Amazing news for all of us that Joelinton got a new deal with the club, such a great player, a big boost. We are glad he sees his future here. He has never doubted his love for Newcastle or his want to stay. He is very popular internally; everyone looks at Joe as a winner. He has a brilliant bond with the supporters as well, hopefully that is a big lift for everyone.”

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of the Spurs, adopts a pragmatic approach towards the club’s ambitions:

“Where we are at the moment, in terms of the squad and where we are with our football, we’re a fair way away from it being one or two crucial things that need to happen.

“I don’t dismiss the fact that maybe we can do it next year but when you look at the other teams we are competing with – they’ve been doing it for four, five, six, seven years.”

“It’s only after you’ve been there at least three or four years that you can start thinking about ‘maybe there’s a missing piece’. It’s more about looking at the broad subject of how we’re going to become a club that can compete at that level.”

“It’s not that I don’t care about it, it’s just not our ultimate ambition. Finishing top four would signal that we’ve made progress but it’s not a destination point for us, so I’ve been reluctant to use that as a marker that we’ve somehow been successful. But it’s still important; if we finish top four this year it means we’ve made progress from last year and gives us foundations for next year, but no guarantees.”

“Especially for a club like this, if you go through two or three disappointing years it can be really hard to get back up there. So I thought it was important we at least got back to a decent level this year and it’s a credit to everyone that we have done that, giving our supporters some hope. But we’ve got to really build on that to make sure it’s sustainable rather than a one-year thing.”

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction:

Both rivals are undoubtedly strongly motivated to qualify for the European competitions on 24/25. The home-field factor speaks in favour of the Magpies, but the Spurs look preferable in other aspects. The Londoners are travelling to St James’ Park with their most optimal squad, while the hosts have too many key players out of action. Tottenham have lost only 3 times in 15 league outings (with 6 wins and 6 draws). In the first leg, they smashed Newcastle 4:1 meaning Ange Postecoglou is well aware of Eddie Howe’s team vulnerabilities and will try to exploit them again. In the last round, the Londoners climbed to 4th place, and this will naturally give the right impetus to create a winning momentum. Still, this will not be an easy walk for Tottenham as the hosts are feeling confident in their walls, being the 6th best home team in the English Premier League. They have lost only 3 times (with 10 wins and 3 draws).

And the goal potential of the upcoming meeting should not let fans of spectacular football down. The average total of matches involving the Magpies in the EPL 23/24 is 3.8 goals, while Spurs also have an impressive 3.5. It should also be noted that Eddie Howe’s men have conceded at least two goals in 5 out of 7 previous home games in the Premier League. Even relegation-threatened Luton Town (7th worst offence in the league) have managed to net four times against Newcastle. Meanwhile, the Londoners have scored two or more goals 6 times in their last 8 away games. What draws the line here is that in 5 of the previous 6 face-to-face meetings, these rivals have seen at least 4 goal takings.

We expect that this trip is unlikely to be ordinary for Tottenham, after all, they are not renowned for their stability. Still, in a fierce confrontation Son Heung-min and his teammates will be able to secure at least one point to consolidate in the top four.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say: Tottenham Hotspur will not lose and the match total will be over 2.5 – Yes.
