Marco Rose: “I identify really strongly with Leipzig; it’s my home. I’ve always said that.”
After the recent RB Leipzig’s UEFA Champions League failure, something that was long on the agenda has happened – Domenico Tedesco has been sacked. His replacement was found instantly – Marco Rosé became the new coach.

The coach appears to be a highly lucrative option, given his vast experience in Germany (previously managing Borussia Dortmund and Borussia M’gladbach). Moreover, he is also very familiar with Red Bull’s philosophy, having had experience at RB Salzburg. The 45-year-old coach, who, on top of everything else, was born in Leipzig (which gives a certain emotional bond), left Dortmund after the finish of last season, meaning he is definitely ready for a new challenge with his sleeves rolled up high.
“In Marco, we have brought in a coach who has a clear conviction when it comes to our playing philosophy. Marco has the things that make up our club’s DNA. We had a stroke of luck that he was available and agreed to join us at short notice. He is a perfect fit because he is very congruent with the club’s fundamental aims. We are convinced that Marco will not only bring continuity and stability to the club, but also development. He can do that brilliantly.”
says Oliver Mintzlaff, Chief Executive Officer of Leipzig.
Meanwhile, his knowledge of the inner kitchen at Signal Iduna Park has not weathered out. Such a test against his former team will be a great indicator of Rose’s readiness to show results here and now. While the Bulls are in 11th place with rather symptomatic defensive problems, it’s time to turn the tide of the season. Such a crisis shake-up, coupled with a new manager, will help the qualitative squad finally climb higher in the table.
Marco Rose shared his thoughts after such a swift appointment:
“I didn’t need much time to agree to become the head coach here…It’s never easy to take on a role in the public eye in your home city. The people here expect a lot from the club and of course from me as well. I identify really strongly with Leipzig; it’s my home. I’ve always said that. Things will change a bit for me and I’ll be judged on results… It was my decision to come to Leipzig and I’m looking forward to it.”
“Of course we need defensive stability. The decisive question is how we approach that. We can’t just defend all the time and sit back, we have to bring stability to our game by being more active in our play and seize the initiative. We have to gain minor victories throughout matches and do that not simply by being passive and not conceding. It’s about actively defending from the front and quickly getting to a point where we can execute the movements we want instinctively. It’s important to develop your own idea of how to be successful, so we’re mainly focusing on ourselves.”
“The team is good, even fantastic. Before the game against Borussia Dortmund it’s important to work on different elements, create an understanding, and discuss principles that we want to see at the weekend in our performance. We’re going up against an in-form team and I know the team well. When they get going, it’s difficult, but I think we have a good chance with our squad.”
Edin Terzic, the Borussia Dortmund gaffer, welcomed his former colleague:
“I am delighted that Marco is back in the Bundesliga. I don’t think either of us would have expected to see each other again so soon. I watched the videos of their games before the coaching change became official. That changes things a bit… And Leipzig have already tried a lot of things and different formations in the past weeks. It wasn’t easy to prepare for the game anyway.”
“We often managed to defend the zero, to defend compactly as a whole team in order to allow few chances for the opponent to score. We took a big step in the right direction there. We are very pleased with how often and how clearly we have created chances in the past three games. On Tuesday in the Champions League, we managed to add the second and third goals early on. We’re on a really good path there, and we want to build on that.”
he spoke about the Bumblebees’ approach to the match.
