Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur. Prediction and Preview. Probable Lineups, Team News, Stats and more

Manchester United will host Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League 12th-tour match at the Old Trafford. The fixture will take place on October 20, beginning at 00:45 IST.

The hosts continue their pursuit of the leading quartet with mixed success, while the next two matches are likely to be decisive as Manchester United are set to face upper-placed Tottenham and Chelsea one after the other. Spurs, in turn, are willing to continue their fight for the top spot, considering the Reds as another milestone to overcome.

Parimatchnews will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Manchester United News & Current Form:

MU are not producing consistent results this season, and the Red Devils’ play rarely looks attractive.  After the devastating 3-6 defeat at the hands of City, the Red Devils have won three times, but 1-0 and 3-2 against Omonia Nicosia from Cyprus and 2-1 against a crumbling Everton are clearly too poor results for a club with super-star Ronaldo and a $100 million Antony from Ajax Amsterdam. Moreover, last weekend, the Mancunians did not even manage one goal against Newcastle United (0-0).

Still, despite their many issues, the Devils sit relatively high in both the EPL (fifth place) and the UEFA Europa League group (only behind the struggling Real Sociedad). Nevertheless, despite staying afloat comparatively well (especially in contrast to Liverpool), frustration with play and performance has not abated among the fans.

The signature Ten Hag football that he is trying to install is so far only recognisable in certain rare stretches of action. In European competitions, Erik’s team have only scored six times in four games, in the league they have scored 13 times in nine meetings with a negative GD (-2).

Cristiano Ronaldo is also worth a mention, as he seems to have truly lost his touch. External pressure and an injury to Anthony Martial have forced the Dutch specialist to give him significantly more time. However, the Portuguese has failed to prove he is worthy of being the first choice for the striker job.

So far, the results have been achieved purely through the personal over-performance of certain team stars, or through sheer luck. In addition, some newcomers have fitted into the team exceptionally well and their contribution cannot be underestimated. The game has been literally transformed with the arrival of Lisandro Martinez, who easily displaced the troubling captain Harry Maguire, and the already-beloved Antony, who is currently on fire as part of the Red Devils (3 goals in the Premier League in 110 minutes). And such reliance on particular figures, such as, say, Bruno Fernandes, is extremely corrosive in case the opponent finds a way to neutralise him.

For the match, the Scousers are not at their best and ten Hag will have to work hard to get at least one point.

Tottenham Hotspur News & Current Form:

Spurs are having a more than decent season so far, while the club’s management want to extend the deal with head coach Antonio Conte, who has already greatly reshaped the team. Tottenham have no such problems as their upcoming opponents: they are on top of the table alongside Manchester City and have already scored 22 goals (3rd best in the league). In addition, they are leading the Champions League group. Now, they are only 4 points behind first-placed Arsenal, which in fact handed the Whites their only defeat in the EPL. On the last matchday, Spurs confidently overcame Everton 2-0 at home, after they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 in the fourth leg of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Also, the Londoners have a prominent leader well in form – Harry Kane has scored five goals in his last six games for the club. The Englishman, bolstered by Heung-min Son (5+2 in 14 games), should cause the hosts plenty of problems. However, the losses of important players like Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are also taking their toll.

Despite the positive result that Conte’s lads have achieved, Spurs’ scoring productivity does not match the top teams’ level. In the last nine games in the main English championship, the Londoners scored more than two goals per game only once – in the encounter with relegation-zone side Leicester City (6-2) in round 8. The situation is not insurmountable, though, given that Manchester United have only scored one goal in their last two matches in all competitions, and that was from penalty. While MU’s defence has certainly declined in recent years (15 conceded goals in nine games is the worst result among the top eight).

The upcoming match is also interesting in terms of the duel between Crish and Son. The Portuguese star was only 20th in the Ballon d’Or 2022 voting (winner: Karim Benzema), with the South Korean forward coming in 11th. Son can now surpass Ronaldo at Old Trafford as well. Antonio Conte recently spoke out about Tottenham’s loss to Manchester United last season. The Red Devils beat the Londoners 3-2 on that day with CR7 becoming a Man of The Match after scoring a hat-trick. According to the Spurs manager, it was not Man Utd who crashed them, but Ronaldo. He also voiced his hope that the 37-years-old attacker will be calm in the forthcoming encounter.

What has been said before the match:

Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United gaffer:

“Anthony Martial is not available. With Eriksen, we have to wait. He was just on the pitch. We have to see how he recovers from that and then we will make a decision tomorrow. It’s good to have Scott back. We are happy with that… Defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe have all been sidelined, along with midfielder Donny van de Beek.”

the Dutch specialist revealed the injury situation.

“The start of the season we tried to plan for the overload on players and you see around many clubs now many injuries are coming up. You can’t avoid it, tough football injuries will come. This many games in a long season and what a huge problem is players don’t get a break in the summer, a huge overload and they can’t recover. You have to manage that and protect players not only from injury but to keep them in the right form. You have to rotate, you need a squad, keep everyone fresh to avoid big injuries as much as you can and to get them in the right shape and keep them in the right form.”

“Сonte is a fabulous manager, winning titles, trophies in the Premier League, Italy and you can really see his signature in the match from his team. That’s a big compliment I think.”

Antonio Conte, the Tottenham Hotspur gaffer:

“The most important thing is to try to prepare for the game very well for the period, especially the next two games. We have to play United away, against Newcastle, who yesterday played an amazing game at Old Trafford and then we have a big match against Sporting Lisbon. I think for now we have to be focused and to have all our concentration on these three games.”

The Italian wants to sweep away everything extraneous, including talks on a new contract, and focus on the tough games ahead.

“I think compared to last season, you can see more stability in this team. In every game we go into the pitch with the will, with the desire that there is the possibility to get three points and win the game. Then it can happen in one game, like Arsenal, that you can lose but in every game I think my players feel the possibility to try to fight to get three points. This has to be our target in every game to make difficult the life of our opponent. It was a good start for us but we know very well we have to continue in this way and it is important to start but the most important thing is the way to finish at the end of the season.”

he reflected on the best start Spurs’ had since 1964.

“Honestly I don’t know him very well because we have never played against each other. He did very well with Ajax and for sure he has taken a great job for United because this is one of the best teams in the world. He is trying to bring his ideas into the pitch and I think also the club back him in the transfer market. Like other managers and coaches he needs time to work and to try to improve his team.”

he said about his vis-a-vis.

“Richarlison? I can confirm that the player is not risking to not play at the World Cup. It’s an injury but not so serious. He has a problem in his calf. I think he needs a bit of time to recover and then to be fit. Kulusevski is working. We will see, we will see. Lucas is close… I have another training session to make the best decision. I would like to stick with 3-4-3, because in my idea we’ve worked a lot with this system. Lucas Moura is recovering from his injury, Gil is making progress and then I have Ivan Perisic who can play like a striker. He did this in the past. And he can do it again on Wednesday. ”

he said on his game plan.

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction:

Although Tottenham have lost their last three games to the Mancunians, this is the moment when Antonio Conte’s side look advantageous. Plus, the figure of the Italian coach himself will play an important role – everyone is aware of his tactical wisdom and flexibility. In contrast to Eric ten Hag, he has long since established the mechanisms of play in his team. However, for MU, this is a home game and the hosts will refrain from ‘entrenching’ at the legendary and power-giving Old Trafford. They should score at least once. Therefore, an exchange of goals is inevitable.

However, we shouldn’t expect too many goals. Both teams are unsympathetic when it comes to playing number one, so we’ll be able to see more balance and more fighting than domination by either side. We’re expecting a counter-tempo game.
