Man United suspend young star Mason Greenwood amid domestic violence accusations
Mason Greenwood is in big trouble: the Man United player has been arrested by Greater Manchester City police and is suspected of rape and assault.
On Sunday, Greenwood’s girlfriend Harriet Robson posted creepy photos to her Instagram Stories. She had a badly shattered lip, as well as many bruises of varying sizes on her arms, legs and face. In one of the posts, Robson captioned, “For anyone who wanted to know what Mason Greenwood is really doing to me.”
And that’ not all: the girl followed up by posting an audio recording of allegedly Greenwood’s voice. In the published audio, the football player was very rudely forcing Harriet to have sexual intercourse.
Police of Manchester statement:
“Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence … following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.”
A little later, the girl deleted the posts and all information about herself from the account, but later restored some photos. It seems that Harriet and Mason broke up a few months ago – their followers noticed that the soccer player and the girl deleted photos together from Instagram. The audio, which Robeson posted, was recorded on Oct. 22. When the video of the beating was made is not yet known.
At first, Man Utd reacted cautiously:
And a little later released a statement indicating that he has suspended Greenwood from training and games indefinitely.
The girl’s father said her phone was hacked. He seems to be more worried about the story going public
“Any father wouldn’t want to know that something like this happened to his daughter. The police are already aware, Harriet has filed a report. She said her phone was hacked. We told her to delete it, and she did, but it was too late. She’s depressed because she didn’t want it to go online. We’ve known Greenwood since he played for the youth. He was part of our family for 2-3 years. In the last few months, their relationship hasn’t been going well. And she’s just heartbroken over it all.”
As a reminder, academy product Greenwood has played for Manchester United’s main team since 2018. This season, the 20-year-old player participated in 18 matches of the English Premier League, scored 5 goals and made 1 assist. As a member of the Mancunians, the forward is a finalist of the UEFA Europa League 2020/2021 season. Greenwood has been called up to the England national team since 2020.
Ole-Gunnar Solskjær once admired the midfielder before his dismissal, predicting a great future for him:
“He is phenomenal. His progress is obvious and strong. Mason works hard at every training session and doesn’t spare himself during matches. I think if he continues to work at this level for a couple more seasons he’ll grow into a real star.”
- Domestic violence is a felony in the U.K. and can get – up to 5 years for it, and 4 to 7 years for sex offenses. But it all depends on the degree of battery, the prosecution can apply a more serious article.
- If the charges are confirmed, the obvious outcome, in addition to imprisonment, he would be sanctioned from the MU and a possible breach of contract with both the club and its sponsors. Nike has said it is “deeply concerned” by allegations made against Mason Greenwood.
