5 Fastest Hat-tricks in the Indian Super League
Spanish midfielder Iker Guarrotxena created history on Thursday in Goa’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Goa player struck a hat-trick against East Bengal in only 12 minutes, which happens to be the fastest hat-trick in this season’s Indian Super League.
Since its inception back in 2014, we have seen plenty of rapid hat-tricks in this competition, which is a testament to the supreme calibre of players who have featured in ISL. In this article, Parimatch News will look at the players who scored the five fastest hat-tricks in the competition, in terms of the duration between the first and the third goal.
#5 Marcelinho – 18 Minutes (27th November 2016)
Besides Corominas, Marcelinho is the only player on this list who is not a part of the league anymore, though he did feature for NorthEast United only last season. A well-travelled player, Marcelinho represented five other ISL teams except for the Highlanders – Delhi Dynamos, Pune City, Hyderabad, Odisha, and ATK Mohun Bagan.
His record, however, came with the team who first introduced the Brazilian wizard to Indian football – Delhi Dynamos, who now are known as Odisha. In a match against Goa at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on 27th November 2016, the winger took only 18 minutes to score a fantastic hat-trick.
The Dynamos had gone down after Fulganco Cardozo scored for the Gaurs, but his 38th-minute strike helped them get back in the hunt. In the second half, Marcelinho took all but 11 minutes to add two more goals to his tally, as the Dynamos won the game 5-1.
#4 Roy Krishna – 14 Minutes (8th February 2020)
Roy Krishna might not have had a good start to his career in Bengaluru, but when he first arrived in India back in 2019, the Fiji striker was certainly the best overseas signing across all teams. With 15 goals in that season, Krishna not only won the Golden Boot but also helped his team, the erstwhile ATK, win the title.
He scored one hat-trick in that season, which came against Odisha in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on 8th February 2020. After a goalless first half, the hosts desperately needed a saviour and they got one in Krishna.
He opened the scoring in the 49th minute by tucking home a pass from Javi Hernandez, who interestingly, is still a teammate of Krishna in Bengaluru. The next two goals were scored in quick succession, as ATK won the match 3-1.
#3 Iker Guarrotxena – 12 Minutes (26th January 2023)
Guarrotxena took only 12 minutes to complete his hat-trick against East Bengal, which hands him the third position on our list. The first goal came off a ricochet which set him free, but the Spaniard still had to beat the Torchbearers’ goalkeeper, Kamaljit Singh.
The second goal came from a delightful Noah Sadaoui cross, where Guarrotxena did well to beat his marker, Ivan Gonzalez, and meet the delivery with his head. The ball struck the woodwork before eventually finding the back of the net.
For the third goal, a Sanson Pereira lay-off found him through on goal with only the keeper to beat yet again, but he had his shirt pulled by a desperate VP Suhair. Despite that, Guarrotxena did well to chip the ball over Kamaljit.
#2 Bartholomew Ogbeche – 10 Minutes (18th October 2018)
Bartholomew Ogbeche, who tops the all-time hat-trick scorers’ charts in ISL with four hat-tricks to his name, is also the second name on this list of fastest hat-tricks. He has played for four teams in the competition but achieved this feat in his very first season with NorthEast United.
In a match against Chennaiyin at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, which took place on 18th October 2018, the Highlanders were struggling for survival as the hosts enjoyed a 2-0 lead. However, the Nigerian goal-machine got a goal back for his team in the 29th minute.
The Marina Machans struck again to restore their two-goal advantage, but Ogbeche struck twice – in the 37th and the 39th minute, to help his team restore parity. Eventually, a Rowllin Borges goal helped the Highlanders win the match.
#1 Ferran Corominas – 7 Minutes (9th December 2017)
The honour of scoring the fastest hat-trick in ISL belongs to Ferran Corominas, who might not be a part of the competition anymore, but will always be fondly remembered as one of the best strikers to have graced the league.
The player, who helped Goa win an ISL League Winners Shield and also the Super Cup, achieved this feat back on 9th December 2017. It was an end-to-end game against Kerala Blasters in Goa’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where the scores were tied 2-2 after half-time.
But the second half saw Coro breaking all records, as it took him all but seven minutes to complete his hat-trick. He scored his first goal from an Ahmed Jahouh pass in the 47th minute, before adding two more to his tally off passes from Brandon Fernandes and Manuel Lanzarote. Besides this, Coro also happens to be the only player to have scored two consecutive hat-tricks in ISL.
