Bayern Munich will be eyeing a record-extending 11th Bundesliga title in 2022-23

Bayern Munich continued their dominance over the Bundesliga with yet another title triumph in 2021-22 which took their league winning streak to 10 seasons in a row.

When the new Bundesliga 2022-23 season begins on 6th August, the defending champions will take on Eintracht Frankfurt in their campaign opener, with eyes firmly set on a record-extending 11th Bundesliga title.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann will be looking to win back-to-back league titles, and they’ve added some more firepower to their attacking arsenal in the form of Sadio Mane. Serge Gnabry appears set to stay, and despite the fact that Robert Lewandowski’s future remains up in the air, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the 2022-23 Bundesliga season.

#1 Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund – 8th October

Without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest threat to Bayern’s 11th Bundesliga title in a row will be their arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund. Despite the fact that the Yellow Army have sold Erling Haaland to Manchester City, they’ve added considerable firepower to their arsenal.

Sebastian Haller, Niklas Sule, and Karim Adeyemi have all arrived, and after finishing just 9 points adrift of the champions, BVB will be hoping to push the German giants all the way.

The Bavarians won the first Der Klassiker last year 3-2, and in the reverse fixture later in April, the Allianz Arena outfit triumphed 3-1.

The Westfalenstadion will host Nagelsmann’s in the first Klassiker of this season, on 8th October, and with the kind of history between these two German powerhouses, no wonder it’s going to be a nail-biting contest.

#2 Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig – 12th January

RB Leipzig is rising up the ladder of the football pyramid with each passing season. The Bundesliga title race won’t be a two-horse affair with looking to disrupt Leipzig the Bayern Monopoly.

It was Nagelsmann who coached Die Roten Bullen into a formidable side, and after a season of transition last year, they will be hoping to challenge Dortmund and uproot the Bavarians’ stranglehold on the Bundesliga trophy.

Domenico Tedesco’s side finished fourth in the league in 2021-22, behind Bayer Leverkusen and they somehow convinced Christopher Nkunku to sign a long-term deal, as the French forward was their best performer last year.

Despite their dominance, Bayern will have to watch over their shoulder as RB Leipzig will be looking to spoil the party as the two sides face off on 12th January, which will be the first fixture after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup break.

#3 Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen – 1st October

Leverkusen pipped RB Leipzig into third place last year, and they will be looking to keep that momentum going into the 2022-23 season as well.

Bayern registered an emphatic 5-1 win at the home of Leverkusen in October 2021, while the second league meeting was a much closer contest ending in a 1-1 stalemate.

19-year-old Czech striker Adam Hlozek has been added to the roster, while the club will be looking to keep hold of Moussa Diaby who was by far Leverkusen’s best performer from last year.

The first meeting between Bayer and Leverkusen will take place on 1st October at the Allianz Arena, and the reverse fixture on 18th March, with both the matches expected to provide plenty of fireworks.

#4 Bayern Munich vs Augsburg  – 17th September

Known as the Bavarian derby, this is a relatively new battle following Augsburg’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 2011 but since then, there has been a lot of spice added to this fixture given the fact that the two clubs are only separated by 40.3 miles.

While Augsburg may not be able to match Bayern’s firepower, they can pull off an odd upset just like they did last year by beating Die Roten 2-1 in November.

Nagelsmann’s side avenged that loss by picking up a 1-0 win later in April, and so we can expect plenty of drama when the two Bavarian clubs come face to face.

Augsburg will play hosts to the defending champions on 17th September in the first Bavarian derby of the 2022-23 season, followed by the reverse fixture on 11th March.

#5 Bayern Munich vs Eintracht Frankfurt  – 6th August

Bayern open their Bundesliga title defence away to Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt on the opening day on 6th August 2022.

Surprisingly, Frankfurt pulled off a major coup in October when they downed Die Roten 2-1 in their own backyard, while the German superclub got their revenge in February as they beat the home side 1-0.

This particular fixture will be of great importance for both sides not just because it’s the first game of the season, but because both Bayern and Frankfurt will be looking to build momentum from the get-go.

The Eagles finished a disappointing 11th in the Bundesliga last year and will be hoping for better fortunes this time around. Also, there will be a reunion on the cards with Mario Gotze having joined Frankfurt during the current transfer window.

The second league meeting between Nagelsmann’s side and Eintracht Frankfurt will be on 28th January at the Allianz Arena.
