Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to build on their third-place finish from last season

After finishing third in the Bundesliga in 2021-22, Bayer Leverkusen will be hoping to go one step better in the upcoming season. They amassed 64 points from 34 games with Moussa Diaby and Patrick Schick impressing throughout the campaign.

While Shick contributed 24 goals and five assists to finish the season as Die Werkself’s top-scorer, Diaby also enjoyed a stunning campaign as he racked up 17 goals and 14 assists across all competitions.

Leverkusen has done a commendable job by retaining both of their star performers from last season, although Diaby has been linked to Newcastle United as per reports. As far as incomings are concerned Adam Hlozek has been signed from Sparta Prague while Joshua Eze and Sadik Fofana have been called up from the U19 squad.

Manager Gerardo Seoane has done a commendable job and he will be looking to build upon last season’s third-place finish. The motive for Leverkusen will be to secure Champions League football once again. With plenty of positives to look forward to in the upcoming 2022-23 season offers plenty of optimism to Leverkusen fans.

#1 Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen – 1st October

Undoubtedly the biggest match of the season for Leverkusen will be their league meeting with Bayern Munich.

Apart from the fixtures against the likes of Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and others, it will be imperative for the club from BayArena to take maximum points from the games against the reigning champions if they’re looking to finish inside the top three again.

The first meeting between Leverkusen and Bayern will take place on 1st October at the Allianz Arena, while the reverse fixture is scheduled for 18th March.

Last year, Bayern registered an emphatic 5-1 win over Seoane’s men, while the second league meeting ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

#2 Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen – 1st October

Leverkusen will face a testing trip to the Signal Iduna Park in their first league game of the season. Die Werkself finished just five points behind BVB last season and they will be keen to go better this term.

Dortmund earned a hard-fought 4-3 win earlier in September 2021, while Leverkusen earned redemption later in February 2022, with a stunning 5-2 victory.

Traditionally, matches between these two clubs have been high-scoring affairs and fans can expect another livewire when Leverkusen open their 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign in August.

#3 RB Leipzig vs Bayer Leverkusen – 29th October

October will be a key month in Leverkusen’s upcoming league campaign as they first face Bayern, followed by matches against Schalke, Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg, before closing out the month against RB Leipzig.

Having pipped Die Roten Bullen into third place last term, the upcoming season will see both clubs trying to keep up the pace with Dortmund and Bayern.

In the end, it could boil down to the head to head between Leverkusen and Leipzig. The last time they faced off, Seoane’s men suffered a 0-1 defeat, while they had won the reverse fixture 3-1 earlier in November.

#4 Borussia Monchengladbach vs Bayer Leverkusen – 22nd January

Due to the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar being held in November-December, the Bundesliga’s winter break will be extended to 10 weeks, and Leverkusen resume their league campaign in a crucial away game against Borussia Monchengladbach on 22 January.

Even though the Foals endured a difficult season last term, they will be hoping to finish in the top four, and by that perspective, Leverkusen would try to take as many points as possible from their fellow top-four hopefuls.

Die Werkself won both their previous two league meetings against Monchengladbach, winning 4-0 and 2-1 respectively. However, after a long and tiring World Cup campaign, and Leverkusen’s European commitments, it will be interesting to see how Gerardo Seoane rotates his side.

#5 Bayer Leverkusen vs Eintracht Frankfurt – 8th April

Similar to the month of October, April could also make or break Leverkusen’s 2022-23 league campaign, with consecutive games against Frankfurt, Wolfsburg and Leipzig.

Frankfurt finished last season in mid-table, but after winning the UEFA Europa League, they will be gunning for a top-four finish. Die Werkself did beat the Eagles 2-0 when they last met in May earlier this year, but Frankfurt registered a resounding 5-2 win back in December 2021.

Should Leverkusen beat their fellow top-four hopefuls, they will head into the crucial month of April with momentum in their stead.
