The three Sri Lankan cricketers have been suspended and are on their way back home from England

Sri Lanka cricket team is going through a troubled time in the United Kingdom as three of their key players—batsman Kusal Mendis, wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella and all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka were recalled to the country by their cricket board, following the reports of breach of Covid-19 protocols which may have put the entire tour in jeopardy.

The Sri Lankan cricket team has already faced a lot of criticism from fans and media alike back home, after they went down 0-3 to England in the recently-concluded T20I series without putting up any fight in any of the matches.

The fans of the Sri Lankan cricket team have gone to the extent of starting an online movement, in which they are urging one and all to unfollow the national players who are present on social media with verified profiles.

Now, a recent video has emerged which showed three of the current Sri Lankan cricketers breaching protocols as they can be seen roaming in public space which might put the tour of England to risk. It must be remembered that the cricketers are in no way allowed to venture out on their own during the times of pandemic, especially when it has been incredibly tough for the administrators of the sport to organise bilateral as well as multi-team tournaments.

It is now being reported that the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board has now recalled these three cricketers back home, while the series in England in which they are yet to play three ODIs, will go ahead as per the schedule. The reports also added that these players could miss their upcoming three-match home series in ODI and T20 formats against India.

SLC vice president Mohan de Silva was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo,

”The players have been suspended pending a full inquiry, but have confessed to having gone out. They are being recalled from the tour with immediate effect.”
