Punjab Kings hand Gujarat Titans second defeat in league round
For a team which has largely been inconsistent in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 tournament, Mayank Agarwal’s Punjab Kings (PBKS) did an incredible job on Tuesday night when they defeated the table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) by a huge margin of 8 wickets in the match number 48.
Gujarat Titans had their big guns in Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya flopping with the bat once again as they could manage a paltry total of 143/8 in their first innings after they won the toss and elected to bat.
In their reply, Punjab Kings were boosted by a fluent half-century from Shikhar Dhawan, 40 from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and an unbeaten 30 not out from Liam Livingstone who got his runs in only 10 balls that he faced.
The victory for Punjab Kings was also a big one in terms of margin as they scored 145/2 in 16 overs, thus winning the contest by 8 wickets and 4 overs to spare which gave them a huge push in the points table for the IPL 2022 tournament.
While Gujarat Titans remained at the top of the IPL 2022 points table with 8 victories in 10 matches so far giving them 16 points and a net run rate of 0.158, Punjab Kings moved up to the 5th spot with 5 wins and as many losses in 10 matches giving them a total of 10 points, but a NRR which they must improve. Punjab’s NRR is currently at -0.229.
Gujarat wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha tried to provide their side with a brisk start when he cracked 3 boundaries and a 6 to score 21 from 17 balls but disappointing returns from Shubman Gill (9) and Hardik Pandya (1) meant that the new IPL team was on the back foot for the majority of their innings.
It was largely due to an unbeaten 65 from Sai Sudharsan who scored his runs from 50 balls with the help of 5 boundaries and a six that pushed the total for Gujarat Titans close to the 150-run mark.
Sai Sudharsan found many other Gujarat batsmen making brief contributions to help him in his endeavour of getting a competitive score for his side. The Punjab Kings fast bowler Kagiso Rabada returned with impressive numbers of 4-0-33-4 whereas the other bowlers in Arshdeep Singh, Rishi Dhawan and Liam Livingstone took one wicket each.
The victory for Punjab Kings was also set up by a strong 87-run stand for the second wicket between Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who made most of favourable batting conditions at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to power their team to an impressive victory over a top side.
