Mumbai Indians suffer 5th consecutive loss as Punjab Kings win by 12 runs

Punjab Kings produced an all-round display of cricket to beat Mumbai Indians

The five-time title winners Mumbai Indians (MI) were on Wednesday subjected to more disappointment on the field as Punjab Kings (PBKS) recorded a win by 12 runs against the most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 tournament.

In the contest played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday night, Punjab Kings made full use of perfect batting conditions as half-centuries from their captain Mayank Agarwal and senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan along with crucial contribution from Shahrukh Khan and Jitesh Sharma powered PBKS to a strong total of 198/5 in their 20 overs.

In reply, Mumbai Indians had their hopes pinned on their explosive captain Rohit Sharma, who yet again failed to convert a start. South Africa and Punjab bowler Kagiso Rabada had Rohit Sharma caught by Vaibhav Arora for 28 from 17 balls after he had hit 3 fours and 2 sixes to provide his side a quick start.

Ishan Kishan could manage just 3 as Vaibhav Arora had him caught behind by wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma as Mumbai were left struggling at 32/2 in 4.1 overs. Mumbai Indians desperately needed a recovery and their young batsmen Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma chipped in with an 84-run stand for the third wicket to bring them back on track.

However, Dewald Brevis was dismissed for a 25-ball 49 and Tilak Varma was run out for 43 as Mumbai Indians were again pushed on the backfoot. They still had their senior and dependable batsmen in Suryakumar Yadav (43) and Kieron Pollard (10) yet to bat, but the former was run out which pegged them back again.

Suryakumar Yadav fought hard until the end but his dismissal in the 19th over, when Mumbai needed another 22 runs from 10 balls put the game completely in favour of Punjab Kings, who went on to complete a 12-run win. Chasing 199 to win, Mumbai Indians finished at 186/9 in their 20 overs.

West Indies all-rounder Odean Smith was the star with the ball for Punjab Kings against Mumbai Indians, taking plenty of wickets in the final over of the match to return with 3-0-30-4 while Kagiso Rabada took 2/29 and Vaibhav Arora took 1/43.

Earlier in the match, Mayank Agarwal scored 52 from 32 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes whereas Shikhar Dhawan smacked 3 sixes and 5 fours to make 70 from 50 balls as Punjab Kings took control of the contest early on.  Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan added 97 runs for the first wicket to put Punjab in control.

PBKS were also helped by Jitesh Sharma’s 15-ball 30 whereas aggressive batsman Shahrukh Khan scored a 6-ball 15 towards the end as their knocks helped their side get close to the 200-run mark. For Mumbai Indians, right-arm fast bowler Basil Thampi took 2/47 from his four overs.
