Australian opener David Warner has expressed that the selectors have an extreme call to make ahead of his side’s first game of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Australia is yet to finalize their batting order as players keep on bumping for spots. Tim David’s inclusion into the yellow side a very short ways off of the competition has given them a valuable option in the middle order as the 26-year-old keeps on dazzling.
In the second T20 against West Indies on Friday (October 7), David scored 42 off just 20 deliveries, clearing the ropes thrice in the process. Preceding this, he had also hit a rapid fifty against India in his maiden tour with Australia.
“Each individual has their roles – we’ve got Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell who is our finishers – (so) where does he fit in the line-up and what’s his role?”
Warner said after the second T20I.
“Coming out and playing that role there when it was a hard wicket to start on opens our eyes to ‘how do we utilize that?’
“But even what he did for Mumbai (Indians, in the IPL), he got a couple of thirties or forties off eight or nine balls – it’s incredible. You don’t get these types of players every day. It’s going to be good for us moving forward and hopefully, there’s a spot there as well because the selectors have got a headache now.”
Warner was especially satisfied with the way that David was valiant in his approach although Australia had recently lost two critical wickets in the crucial moment of the game.
“Presently he’s in our group and our set-up, it’s a blessing,”
Warner noted.
“He’s an unbelievable player and he has some serious power. It supports our center’s request. With his level too and strength, it suits us that is without a doubt.
“You saw it there – when we lost myself and there are two new batters in, ‘Maxi’ (Glenn Maxwell) got run out, and he came out to play like that – that’s fearless cricket. That’s what we like about our brand at the moment. Everyone owns their own space, but when you execute your skill and what you practice, that’s what we want.”
Australia will play three T20Is against England before the World Cup to choose their combination with Marcus Stoinis also entering the battle after getting sidelined with an injury. The first T20I is set to be played on Sunday in Perth.
