Two teams in crisis will meet in a Europa League game. Will Sevilla overpower MU to get one step closer to lifting the 7th UEL trophy?

Sevilla FC will host Manchester United FC in the UEFA Europa League 1/4 finals match at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. The fixture will take place on Friday, April 21, beginning at 00:30 IST.

What can we expect this Friday night? Parimatch News will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Sevilla Milan News & Current Form:

This season, Sevilla have been performing quite poorly in the LaLiga championship and have already changed several coaches (first Julen Lopetegui was fired, and then Jorge Sampaoli), but the club will most likely finish the championship calmly above the relegation zone, in which it spent a significant part of it.

Last weekend, Sevilla won an important away match against Valencia CF (2:0), who are on the brink of relegation in 18th place. The gap between the two teams increased to eight points after this, so the Andalusians can feel fairly comfortable and now focus their efforts on their favorite competition, the Europa League, which they have won a record six times. They won the tournament twice in 2006 and 2007, then three consecutive times from 2014 to 2016. Finally, they managed to win it for the sixth time in 2020

The first game against Manchester United ended very unexpectedly for everyone. At Old Trafford, the hosts easily dominated in the first 20 minutes. They scored three times, although the referees only counted two goals. Sancho’s goal in the 27th second was disallowed due to offside, but Marcel Sabitzer scored a double without breaking any rules. Interestingly, both times the Austrian scored with his left foot, even though he is right-footed.

But instead of a calm 2:0 victory, the English team ended up with a draw. Both goals conceded by Manchester United were own goals – first by Tyrell Malacia, then by Harry Maguire.

Sevilla miraculously achieved a draw in the first quarterfinal match. The team should not relax, as in the previous Europa League campaign, they were eliminated by the English club West Ham United FC, despite winning the first match. However, in general, Sevilla play quite successfully against English teams in the knockout stages of European competitions and have advanced past them in 6 out of 8 previous occasions.

The Spaniards will definitely play reliably at home and attack frequently. In the second most important European club competition, Sevilla have not lost at home since 2016. The streak includes 20 matches, with 18 wins and only 2 draws. The club is used to playing strong opponents in European competitions. But Manchester United will not let up in this return match. In similar conditions in the round of 16, the club already eliminated Barcelona.

One of the leaders of the Andalusians, Marcos Acuña, admitted that the game at Old Trafford affected the overall state of his team:

“Even when we were losing by 2 goals, we never thought about giving up. We knew we could score at least one goal, and in the end, we could even hope for a victory. This is very inspiring. We count on the strong support of our fans. We don’t care about the status of the opponent – Sevilla wants to win the Europa League.”

Manchester United News & Current Form:

After the game against Sevilla over the weekend, ten Hag’s team faced Nottingham Forest FC and won 2:0 with goals from Diogo Dalot and Antony Santos. In the English Premier League, the club is doing fairly well and could move up to third place in the near future. It is worth noting that Manchester United’s defense often falters: they have conceded 37 goals in 30 matches of the English championship.

Ten Hag’s charges have been affected by a tough schedule – the club has been playing twice a week for several months. As a result, more and more players are getting injured. Just a week ago, defender Lisandro Martinez was also out.  Due to an excess of yellow cards, Bruno Fernandes, the team’s main attacking brain, cannot currently help the team.

The central defender Raphael Varane will also be out, and the participation of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial is also questioned. Home team Sevilla is a real fighter, especially when it comes to Europa League matches, and they will definitely take advantage of the difficult personel situation of their opponents.

After a draw, any victory will be enough for the opponents to advance to the semifinals. In case of another draw, the game will go into extra time. It is worth noting that Manchester United have overcome the quarterfinal barrier in their three previous Europa League performances. Interestingly, the Red Devils have not lost to Spanish clubs for six matches in the UEL (4 wins, 2 draws).

MU scored 21 times in the current tournament, with only Feyenoord Rotterdam scoring more (22). Man Utd perform well on the road in the Europa League and have not lost in their last 5 matches (4 wins, 1 draw).

After the Nottingham game, coach Erik ten Hag commented on the game and the team’s condition:

“I am satisfied with the team’s reaction. We played a decent game, especially in defense. You know we have problems with the squad, so I’m happy we managed not to concede.”

“Now is the most important stretch of the season. Essentially, every subsequent match will be a final for Man Utd. Of course, we need as many players as possible, as we continue to fight on several fronts.”

What has been said before the match:

Boss of Spanish team José Luis Mendilibar ahead of the return Europa League clash:

“Every win helps, you come off the back of a win in Valencia and a positive result in Manchester and I think that the players are mentally in good shape. We know they’re a difficult opponent, but we’re going to compete and I think both sides have the same chance of progressing.”

“Rashford is one of the best strikers there is at the moment, but we’re not going to adjust our plan depending on whether he plays or not, we’re thinking about ourselves and respecting our opponents. If he plays it will be because he is fit, but if he doesn’t, someone else will play who will be as good as him or almost as good.”

“I anticipate what it’s going to be like, the stadium at full capacity with the club’s colors and from start to finish supporting the players. The excitement is there and even if we haven’t won certain games, this competition is different for Sevillistas and you can see it on the street. It’s something different and tomorrow we’ll see.”

The Devils’ coach Erik ten Hag about the dramatic draw with Sevilla in the 1st game:

“It is clear how the game went. It is a tie of two legs, I think we played for over 60 minutes quite well and the last 30 minutes we dropped a level and we became passive.”

“It is not acceptable, we know that, you see what happens when you only play a game for 60 minutes. You can’t do it and when you do it you get punished.”

“We have to be aware of it, we have taken the lesson on Sunday against Nottingham Forest and you have seen a different Man United but tomorrow we have to go again.”

“You have to use motivation as a tool and control it. The timing of that is important. In big games especially, you have to know how to use it. We need to focus on the game and play the best game we can.”

“Our organization all over the pitch is quite good. We need to do better attacking. I am confident that we can score goals tomorrow.”

Christian Eriksen about upcoming opponent:

“We let them in the game in the first game. We had good control for the first hour of the game. They have had a lot of different coaches this season, but they are now starting to win games. They have a good team, good form and some very good individuals.”

Sevilla vs Manchester United Prediction:

It looked like the match at Old Trafford would be the end of the frustrating winless streak, but somehow the Mancunians let it all slip away as Sevilla continue their dominance against Manchester United. The Red Devils have been unable to beat the Spanish side for five games. In addition, the Nervións are historically good at home in the Europa League: since 2016, they have never lost on their field. Of course, now they will do everything to prolong this trend and the chances of that are not insignificant. Firstly, after Mendilibar’s arrival, Sevilla are on the rise, and secondly, the visitors are experiencing significant personnel losses in all lines, while the hosts have all their players in place.

The combination of the above factors suggests that Sevilla will not lose in the return leg, at least in regulation time. And given that the hosts approach the match from a position of strength looking to be catching Erik ten Hag’s men in a diminished attacking guise on the counters, we expect few goals.
