The Angel Di Maria magic on his Serie A debut day

The race for the 2022-23 Serie A trophy begins as all Italian top-flight outfits are charging right away from the first matchday. AC Milan announced themselves as the defending champions in style while many big guns were almost knocked off on the debut day of the season.

Hence, ‘Parimatch News‘ brings you a detailed roundup overview of all Serie A fixtures of Gameweek 1.

Sampdoria 0-2 Atalanta

Atalanta registered a convincing victory in the Serie A 2022-23 season opener against UC Sampdoria. The 26th-minute strike from the central defender Rafael Toloi with the assistance of Mario Pasalic opened the scoreline for the Black and Blues. Then the injury-time goal of the debutant winger Ademola Lookman right before the final whistle ensured their maiden away victory of the season in the very first fixture.

AC Milan 4-2 Udinese

The defending champions of the Italian top-flight league kick-started their title-defense campaign in style. The Rossoneri side registered a 4-2 win over Udinese in a six-goal fest at their home turf San Siro. The deadlock of the scoreline was broken in the second minute itself by the Udinese defender Rodrigo Becao’s headed goal which acted as an eye-opener for the reigning champions.

The Friulians once again got themselves on the scoresheets after Adam Masina’s injury-time goal levelled the scoreline on 2-2 at the half-time whistle. Then the Milano Devils took the matter into their hands and scored two more in the latter half. Two goals from Ante Rebic and one goal each from the two Madrid outlets Theo Hernandez and Brahim Diaz helped them to bring on their third consecutive MatchDay 1 triumph.

Monza 1-2 Torino

The Turin-based club trampled down the newly promoted outfit AC Monza who are playing at the highest promotion of Italian football for the first time. The visitors were leading by 2-0 after the strikes of Aleksei Miranchuk and Antonio Sanabria when the clock touched the 90-minute mark. Then the hosts managed to pull off an injury-time consolation goal as Dany Mota became the first player from Moza to get himself on the scoresheet.

Lecce 1-2 Inter

The runners-up of the 2021-22 Serie A edition also kick-started their campaign with a win over the newly promoted side Lecce. The star Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku announced his comeback to the Milan Blues by scoring in the second minute of his very first Serie A appearance of his loan stint. The veteran full-back Matteo Darmian assisted Lukaku in order to register their first goal of the season.

However, Inter’s one-goal lead was demolished by the 48th-minute befitting reply as the Gambian forward Assan Ceesay played the final move of a beautiful counter-attack from the Salentians. The Apulia-based club was on the verge of holding giants Inter Milan for a draw in the very first fixture of the top-flight league.

The 26-year-old Dutch wing-back who arrived at the pitch in the 67th minute finally got the breakthrough in injury time and snatched three game points out of nowhere.

Fiorentina 3-2 Cremonese

Fiorentina played a high-scoring saga against the Serie B runners-up of the previous season, Cremonese. Despite going down to 10 men at the 43rd minute, the visitors were still able to score the 68th-minute equaliser to level it up on 2-2 at Stadio Artemio Franchi. However, the hosts were the ones who had the last laugh and we witnessed another injury-time winning goal when the debutant Rolando Mandragora did it for the Violets.

Lazio 2-1 Bologna

Both Italian combatants were down to 10 men at the kick-off of the second half as the red-card suspension of Luis Maximiano (2′) from Lazio and Adama Soumaoro (45-3′) from Bologna forced them to do so.

A penalty strike from Marko Arnautovic and then an own-goal from Lorenzo De Silvestri in the 68th minute kept the scoreline neutral. Then the star Lazio striker and captain Ciro Immobile turned up for the eagles and claimed all three game points for the Biancocelesti side.

Spezia 1-0 Empoli

After ending the previous season with four back-to-back defeats on the home turf, Spezia was finally able to end their dreaded run at the Stadio Alberto Picco. The Angolan striker M’Bala Nzola’s goal in the 36th minute with the help of Simone Bastoni turned out to be the only goal of the game. It was a tight game where the home team had only 40% possession and released only two shots on target but still ended up on the winning side.

Salernitana 0-1 Roma

A classic Jose Mourinho game where the Portuguese gaffer fished the opposition by losing up grip but still kept them away from the breakthrough. The solitary goal of the game was scored by the Italian midfielder Bryan Christante who struck it in the net in the 33rd minute of the game. Mourinho handed over the first Serie A start to the star Argentine midfielder Paulo Dybala in Giallorossi colours while the legendary Franck Ribery also made a substitute appearance for Salernitana.

Hellas Verona 2-5 Napoli

It was the highest scoring fest of the first matchday of Serie A 2022-23 where we witnessed the ball going back of the net seven times. The home team Verona was able to hold the Naples-based club on 2-2 until the fifty minutes but lost the grip and eventually ended up on the losing side of a 5-2 scoreline. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Victor Osimhen, Piotr Zielinski, Stanislav Lobotka and Matteo Politano contributed one goal each in the thunderous triumph of Napoli.

Juventus 3-0 Sassuolo

The star-studded Juventus roster is ready to launch a full-fledged attack on the current Scudetto holders and we saw a glimpse of that in their first game. The Bianconeri side had less possession and shots on target compared to the visitors but still managed to get away with a win and that too by the margin of three goals.

The first goal of the game was scored by the veteran Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria who was making his Serie A debut and went on to strike a stunning volley right at the top corner.

Then the Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic successfully converted a penalty strike from the spot to double the lead a couple of minutes before the half-time whistle. Vlahovic once again got himself on the scoresheet with a perfect assist from Di Maria which brought up their lead to 3-0 at the 51st minute of the gameplay.

It seems like the Turin-based club has found a perfect replacement for Paulo Dybala in the form of Angel Di Maria who scored the opening goal and also assisted the following field goal.
