Two games remaining in the campaign: Freiburg must beat their rivals if they are to compete for a place in the top-4, while the visitors are looking to secure the 6th position to play in the Conference League 23/24. Who will be more tenacious?

SC Freiburg will host VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga 33rd-tour match at Europa Park Stadion. The fixture will take place on Saturday, May 20, beginning at 00:00 IST.

What can we expect this Saturday night? Parimatch News will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Freiburg News & Current Form:

Freiburg fans must have an unpleasant feeling of déjà vu right now. Like in the previous season, Christian Streich’s side lost in the late stages of the DFB-Pokal. And once again, the team fails at the very end of the national championship, handing their rivals a ticket to the UEFA Champions League with their own hands.

Freiburg sit fifth in the standings with 56 points from 32 games. They are just three points adrift of the UCL. There is still time for the team to get higher. The club is seven points ahead of its nearest pursuer, so they will not be able to move down at any point. The only question is whether they can rise higher.

Michael Gregoritsch – high scoring player of SC Freiburg

The Freiburg side’s performance leaves a lot to be desired towards the end of the championship. The Breisgau Brazilians have lost their last three meetings in a row. Christian Streich’s side were beaten 5 – 1 by RB Leipzig in the German Cup semi-finals, before losing again to the Bulls (0 – 1) in the championship a few days later, thanks to a Kevin Kampl strike in the second half.

Then there was the defeat to FC Union Berlin (2 – 4). As the game went on, the club went 0 – 3 down. Manuel Gulde and Vincenzo Grifo scored twice after the break, but an Aissa Laidouni goal with 10 minutes left gave the Iron Ones an important win.

The club has lost 3 of their 16 matches on home soil. Christian Streich’s charges have scored 48 goals in the Bundesliga this season, the fewest in the top half of the table.

Injured midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh is still missing and his season is terminated early. Right midfielder Lukas Kübler, who was injured in last weekend’s game against Union, is suffering from a muscle sprain and is expected to be unable to take the field. Defender Philipp Lienhart also picked up an injury last weekend, but it was not serious.

Wolfsburg News & Current Form:

Wolfsburg are playing well and keeping their hopes of qualifying for the European competitions alive. They beat TSG Hoffenheim 2 – 1 in the last round. Jakub Kaminski netted the opening goal and Luca Waldschmidt doubled the Wolves’ lead in the second half.

That win propelled the club into the European zone and they are now in sixth place in  the Bundesliga standings. But it is too soon to rejoice, because the team cannot guarantee a place in the top six. Only in goal difference the visitors are above Bayer 04 Leverkusen and only three points ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt, so now is not the time to relax and lose points, even in a game with such strong rivals as Freiburg, otherwise you can not get into the European competitions for next year.

VfL Wolfsburg players celebrating a win

Wolfsburg are in good form and have won 3 of their last 4 matches in the league with the only loss coming at the hands of Borussia Dortmund (6 – 0).

Wolfsburg’s defense is noticeably inferior to that of Leipzig in terms of reliability. This was clearly demonstrated in Dortmund, when Niko Kovac’s charges received six unanswered goals from the local BVB. And in the last four rounds, the Wolves did not concede a goal only once – in a  home game against FSV Mainz 05 (3 – 0).

In the first leg, the Wolves demolished Freiburg at home (6 – 0). There’s no doubt that Streich’s men will exact revenge this week. There’s nowhere else for them to go.

Wolfsburg will be missing important striker Lukas Nmecha, defenders Maxence Lacroix, Paulo Otavio and Niklas Klinger. Otherwise, most of the key players in Niko Kovac’s system are present.

What has been said before the match:

Coach of Freiburg Christian Streich ahead of the game with Wolfsburg:

“We still have two games to play and there is no final table yet. The only thing that is certain is that we are at least fifth and in the Europa League. That is wonderful. But things can happen in football.”

“We want to play a good game in all circumstances and win the game. But the task will be hard enough against Wolfsburg. They are a difficult team to play against. You don’t know how they play tactically. They have pace, they have physicality. But now we want to play a great game in the last home game and put everything into it.”

“Nothing is done. If we were to win, the others would have to follow suit. They have to manage that first then. As funny as it sounds, in the preliminary round the World Cup helped us with the break. A lot of players played a lot. And we kept running it. We have now lost two games in a row for the first time in the championship. And we played the European Cup.”

The Wolves’ coach Niko Kovac previewed the upcoming Bundesliga game:

“We’ve all played in Freiburg many times. This will be my first time in the new stadium but I’m assuming the atmosphere will be good there too. We’re certainly not the favorites going into the game.”

“We’ll have to really push ourselves and we’ll need a bit of luck to make sure the match goes our way. Having said that, we’re going there with a positive feeling. We’ve played a lot of good games in the last few weeks. That’s what we want to do tomorrow in Freiburg as well.”

About the  6 – 0 win in the first leg he said:

“That game took place at the start of January and it was the first one after the long break for the FIFA World Cup. A lot has happened since then. Even just in terms of tactics a few things are different for both teams, so you can’t compare the two games. It’ll be a completely new game, there’s not a lot you can take into it from the reverse fixture.”

“We want to play in Europe. That’s our objective and we’re not deviating from it. We’re in sixth place for the first time this season and we want to stay there, even if it’ll be anything but easy to do so. Now we’ve got a really tough away game to play because it’s no accident that Freiburg are up there.”

Freiburg vs Wolfsburg Prediction:

Although the visitors can no longer keep up with Freiburg in the standings, the game will not be any less tense. The home side are fighting for the UEFA Champions League spot, while the Wolves have several rivals breathing down their neck in a bid to capture qualification for the UEFA Conference League tournament.

Freiburg, look decent defensively (4th best in the Bundesliga in this regard). In addition, only Borussia Dortmund have managed to score more than one goal at the Europa-Park in the current campaign. This is while in just 2 of their last 7 away games in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg scored at least twice. And that was against Bochum, who have the worst defence in the league (2.2 goals conceded per 90 minutes on average), or against dismantled FC Köln. If the visitors are likely to score, they will not score more than once.
