Atletico have slumped in the league recently, with just one win in four rounds, and as a result have dropped to fifth place in the standings, behind Athletic Bilbao. In the last nine rounds in the Primera they won only the teams located in the lower part of the standings – Villarreal CF (3:1), Mallorca (1:0), UD Almeria (2:1) and Sevilla FC (1:0), and drew with Getafe CF (3:3), lost to UD Las Palmas (1:2), Barcelona (0:1), Athletic from Bilbao (0:2). In the first match of 2024, the Colchoneros lost 4:3 away to Girona and are now ten points behind Real Madrid, who are leading La Liga.

And this is despite the fact that Simeone released a good half of the main squad. The Argentine specialist faces a difficult choice. He recently admitted that three Atletico players may leave for Saudi Arabia because they are not getting enough playing time.

It was a crazy game in every sense, Girona opened the scoring in the 2nd minute and led throughout the game, but in both cases the opponent equalized. All three goals were scored by Alvaro Morata (assisted twice by Rodrigo De Paul): two goals in the first half, one in the second. Morata could have had a hat-trick in the first half, when he scored in stoppage time, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. Still, Atletico couldn’t even hold on to a draw: Ivan Martin scored the fourth and winning goal in the first minute of extra time.

All hope in the upcoming game is on Antoine Griezmann and Morata. It was their goals that helped beat Real Madrid in the last face-off. In 25 matches in all official tournaments, the Frenchman and the Spaniard scored a total of 33 goals and also gave five assists.
