Mumbai City FC has announced the signing of defender Mehtab Singh on a three-year contract keeping him at the club till the end of the 2022-23 season.

The Islanders have made Mehtab Singh their 12th signing during the off-season and the spending spree just doesn’t seem to stop for the Mumbai-based club.

Praising his latest signing, head coach Sergio Lobera said “If you look at the talent pool of young defenders in India, Mehtab stands out. His energy, dynamism, and his desire to win are an asset to any team and we’re glad to have him with us. He is at an age where he can develop and become one of the best centre-backs in the country and prove to be an important part of our squad here at Mumbai City.”

Delighted upon signing for the Islanders, Mehtab said:

“Representing a big club like Mumbai City, it’s a huge honour for me. I’ve always believed putting the hours and in being the best you can every single day. I am here to work hard, I am here to learn and most importantly, I am here to compete.”

Talking about his aims and ambitions while putting pen to paper, the young defender said “The Club, our coach, and I, we have the same desires and the same targets and that is to become the best in the country and win trophies. I look forward to my journey here in my new home.”

The 22-year old came through the junior ranks at East Bengal and made his debut for the senior team in the 2017-18 season. He went on to make 6 I-League appearances in that league season.

Before the start of the 2018-19 season, Mehtab sealed a loan move to Gokulam Kerala in search of more first-team football. After making only 5 appearances for Gokulam, Mehtab returned to East Bengal and enjoyed a break-out season in the 2019-20 season as he made 11 league appearances, starting each one of them.

With Mourtada Fall at the club, Mehtab Singh has a great idol to learn from and he will be hoping to challenge Sarthak Golui for the centre-back berth available alongside Fall.
