Hyderabad has signed former Mumbai City full-back Vignesh Dakshinmaurthy ahead of the 2023-24 Indian Super League season after Akash Mishra went the other way earlier in the transfer window.

The 25-year old has put pen to paper on a four-year contract keeping him at the club till the end of the 2026-27 season.

The left-back talked about how the club has been instrumental in developing the young Indian players over the last few seasons and his excitement for donning the Hyderabad colors.

Vignesh said, “I’m very excited to join Hyderabad FC. Over the last few seasons, the club has shown immense faith in young Indian players and I believe this is the best place for the next stage of my career.”

He continued,

“I’m thankful to the management for showing a lot of faith in me. We have an exciting squad at the club, and I can’t wait to get down to the field and put on the yellow and black jersey.”

Born in the neighboring state of Karnataka, Vignesh came through the Ozone Youth Academy and even represented the club’s senior team in the I-League 2nd division for a couple of seasons before being snapped up by Mumbai City in 2018.

Since then, Vignesh has made 52 ISL appearances for the Islanders with 19 of those coming in the 2020-21 campaign where the Mumbai-based club won the League Winners’ Shield and the ISL trophy double. The left-back once again helped the club win the League Winners’ Shield in the 2022-23 ISL season before switching allegiance to the Nizams.

Before even making his bow for the Islanders, Vignesh featured for the Indian national team in the 2018 SAFF Cup coming on as a substitute against Maldives and Pakistan but didn’t make an appearance in the final.

The Nizam’s co-owner Varun Tripuraneni disclosed how the club has been in touch with their latest signing for a considerable period of time and showered praise on Vignesh’s experience and talent.

He said,

“We’ve been tracking Vignesh for a while now and are extremely happy to have him on board. He was an integral part of two Shield-winning campaigns and knows the demands at this level. Vignesh will be a long-term asset for Hyderabad FC and we believe he will add a lot of strength to our team in the coming seasons.”

The left-sided defender becomes the first signing of the club after a considerable number of departures including head coach Manolo Marquez, Rohit Danu, Halicharan Narzary, Mishra, and Odei Onaindia which marked the end of a glorious era at the club.
