Parimatch News will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Fulham News & Current Form:

Fulham are performing well in the EPL this season, having consolidated themselves in the middle of the standings and so far avoiding the threat of relegation. Londoners are at a safe distance from the drop zone, having maintained an 8-point lead. However, the team has noticeably lost momentum, suffering 4 defeats in the last 5 matches.

An important success for the Cottagers was a 2:1 victory over Arsenal FC. The series of three defeats was interrupted by this sensational victory, but after it the team suffered another defeat, losing to Chelsea FC with a score of 1:0.

In the English Football League Cup, Fulham reached the semi-finals, where they drew 1:1 with Liverpool FC in the return match, but failed to progress further, losing 1:0 in the first leg. This was a huge disappointment for the wards of Marco Silva, who missed the opportunity to win the first major trophy in their history.

In the FA Cup, the Londoners have not shown outstanding results so far. In the previous year, the team dropped out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage, losing to Manchester United FC. In the current season, however, Fulham started with a 1:0 home win over Rotherham United FC. However, in the last 20 years, the club has not gone further than the quarter-finals in this tournament.

On the matter of injuries and absent players, the experienced Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi, as well as defender Fode Ballo-Toure, who are involved in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, are missing from the squad. Winger Adama Traore has been little utilized due to injury.

The coaching staff can count on Mexican striker Raul Jimenez, who has adapted to his new team, as well as midfielder João Palhinha. In the absence of key players, Fulham face challenges, but still hope for a successful performance in the remaining meetings.

Newcastle United News & Current Form:

In the current FA Cup campaign, Newcastle continue to show strong performances, not allowing a hint of a misfire. The team earned a confident 3:0 victory over Sunderland AFC thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Daniel Ballard

Despite a successful start in the Cup, the Magpies are only 10th in the Premier League, falling short of their ambitions after their UEFA Champions League performances last season.

The charges of Eddie Howe have lost their last 4 matches in the league, including to Luton Town FC, Nottingham Forest FC, Liverpool and Manchester City FC. Such a disappointing result makes the fight for high positions in the standings more difficult for Howe’s team.

In the FA Cup, the Black and Whites show more stable results, having broken a series of three consecutive exits from the tournament in the previous season. However, over the past 18 years, the team has made it to the 1/8 finals only once. Another interesting fact is the possibility of Newcastle to set an anti-record and become the first EPL team to lose eight consecutive matches against opponents from the elite division in the Cup.

The club’s squad continues to be weakened by personnel losses. Key players including Nick Pope, Matt Targett, Joelinton, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson are on the injury list. Injuries and absences have put pressure on the team, reducing its rotation options and requiring more workload from key constituent parts.

In the period before the winter transfer window closes, Newcastle remain without newcomers. Despite the need for reinforcements, the team is facing financial fair-play restrictions and has not signed a single player. The possible sale of Miguel Almiron is speculated to attract funds from Saudi Arabia, but so far the player’s consent for a move has not been received.

What has been said before the match:

Gaffer of the Cottagers Marco Silva about dropping out of Carabao Cup and the upcoming game:

“Firstly, we have to use what we did in that competition as a motivation and something that we have to be proud of. Even if we didn’t achieve the Final, it was a great, great run in that competition for us. Really tough games, starting last August against Tottenham Hotspur FC, and ending against Liverpool in two legs.”

“The day after, straightaway we started to prepare for Newcastle and, okay, the faces and the mood were not the best, but our obligation is to change quickly to the right mindset. We had good conversations with the players about it.”

“When you arrive in these types of stages, if you don’t achieve what you wanted and what was our ambition, of course it’s always tough. But the best way for us to be again in this type of stage, is to do our job well in the FA Cup, and this is the reality. The season is far from over for us. We have so many games, so many things to fight for.”

“Of course, the run of form is not the best for Newcastle. It has been tough for them the last four or five games in the Premier League, but you know they are Newcastle, they have enough quality to change it quickly.”

“They have had enough time to prepare for this game, looking for all the details from the last games when they haven’t achieved the good results, and we expect a really strong side.”

Eddie Howe, coach of the Magpies, about the importance of FA Cup for the team:

“We are hopeful you will see a very energetic performance, and a very technical one, because we have put a lot of work into that. We are determined to do well. I believe in this team.”

“It is a big moment in our season, as the Sunderland game was, and the lads really responded to that challenge. This is an important competition for us now, it takes on a new dynamic because of what’s gone before.”

“We are desperate to get our best form back – I think there were signs of that against Sunderland and Manchester City – so we’ll take this game very seriously.”

“It  will be a tough game – you look at the game against Liverpool they had a couple of days ago and that was a really good game, a high-quality game. I thought Fulham were close – they created a number of chances and I thought were pretty good in the game.”

“Marco has done a brilliant job. I think they continue to improve and grow, which is always very difficult in the league that we’re in, so we know it’ll be a tough game.”

Fulham vs Newcastle United Prediction:

In the confrontation between the Cottagers and the Magpies everything looks unambiguous: Fulham have not been able to beat their opponents since March 2017 (7 matches played), having lost the last four matches in a row. Nevertheless, the Londoners now have a good chance to break this series.

It is Fulham that should have a greater level of motivation in the FA Cup, to advance as far as possible in the tournaments – this is the only task and priority for a club of this caliber. And so far they are doing well, even though in the League Cup the Magpies were stopped by the formidable Liverpool. In addition, when assessing the chances of victory, the home field factor should not be underestimated: the Londoners have lost only one of their last seven matches at Craven Cottage (five wins). That said, the Cottagers are experiencing apparent fatigue. In fact, over the last month Fulham have played a number of high-profile teams that produce very intense and aggressive football: Liverpool twice, Chelsea and Arsenal (both away). There was also a match against Rotherham. Four fixtures against top clubs in less than a month is too much for a club with so limited squad depth. It is unclear whether Marco Silva can field a fresh squad without losing quality, having modest resources for rotation.

As for Newcastle, the recent results of Eddie Howe’s wards leave much to be desired (only 2 wins in the last 10 matches). At the same time, fatigue due to a tight winter schedule also catches up with the Magpies, there is a large number of injuries in the ranks of the Black and Whites – 8 important players are unavailable at once, Sandro Tonalli is the ninth, he is serving suspension through sports court. That said, Newcastle at home and away are two big differences. The Magpies have the second worst record in the EPL in terms of away points, picking up five in ten games.

We expect a counter-course duel in which the Cottagers will have a slight advantage. And, based on the goalscoring trends (the average match total in Fulham’s home matches is 3.1; away matches involving Newcastle see a 3.8 goals scored per 90 minutes) we also expect plenty of goalproducing action, with an adjustment for the principality of the cup meeting.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say: Fulham will not lose and the match total will be over 1.5 – Yes.
