Frank Lampard’s fine system: how the new coach will change things at Everton

Lampard demands high standards from his players

Frank Lampard has taken charge of a depressed Everton, stuck at the bottom of the EPL table. It is the third club in his coaching career after Derby and Chelsea. Social media recalled some of the specifics of the Englishman’s coaching.

It is likely that Everton players will now face a special system of penalties, which Lampard invented at Chelsea – this is how he kept the players under control.  Such a document had been hanging on the wall of Chelsea’s training base since 2019.

Here’s the full list:

1. Late for Match day\1st team departure – £2,500
2. Late for Report Time for Training – £2,500 (plus another £2,500 for every other 15 minutes)
3. Late in gym for pre activation £1000.
4. Late for treatment – £2500
5. Late for team meeting – £500 per minute
6. Late for start of training – £20,000
7. Phone ringing during Team meal or meeting – £1000
8. Reporting in the wrong attire/kit for Team Travel and Match days – £1000
9. Not travelling back on Team coach post-match, without giving 48 hours notice to the Manager or an Assistant manager – £5000
10. Refusal or not turning up for corporate/community duties – £5,000
11. Not reporting illness or injury before day off or 1 hour 30 minutes before training – £10,000
12. Late for medical appointments – £2,500

All fines were to be paid within 14 days, and if not, the amount was doubled.  The money collected was spent on team activities and also donated to charities.

In addition, the document specified several other rules – for example, there were separate fines for being overweight, and players’ agents were not allowed to appear at the club base unless Lampard agreed to it.

It seems a bit like the rules Xavi set up when he came to Barcelona.

We’ll soon find out if the same document appears at Everton’s training base. It seems that Toffees could be more disciplined although Rafa Benitez was known for his authoritarian leadership style – however, more than half the season has passed, and the team, which before Lampard was ruled by the Spaniard for 6 months, is in 16th place, only 4 points from the relegation zone.

“In the short-term, the job is to improve our league position and we have a squad that can get better quickly,”

said the Englishman, speaking to the media for the first time as Everton manager on Thursday.

“It starts with work on the training ground and the mindset of the group. I have seen a talented squad but a group that has had a hit on its confidence, which losing games can do – I have been there [as a player]. My priority is to achieve an uplift straight away and I have faith in this group. I have seen they want to do very well for this football club, it is written all over their faces. I hope to give them the direction and organisation, and the ability to express themselves within that, to perform at their best. I want to quickly reach the point where you can see my imprint on the team.”

“Long-term, Everton is a club with big ambition, huge history, a huge fanbase, and a giant desire throughout to improve towards the new stadium; towards being a Premier League club fighting towards the top of the table. There is a lot of work to be done and I am very proud to be at the front of it.”

shared the 43-year-old specialist, talking about the planning horizon.
