Chennaiyin vs Jamshedpur: Preview and Prediction

и
Both teams have had an underwhelming start to their campaign

In the third match of matchday 7 of the 2022-23 Indian Super League season, Chennaiyin will be up against Jamshedpur. The match will be played at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday at 5:30 pm IST.

Chennaiyin has blown hot and cold in this competition so far. They have won two of their five matches, and with seven points to their name, the Marina Machans are occupying the seventh place in the points table.

Jamshedpur, on the other hand, has had a poor start. The ISL League Winners’ Shield-winning team from last season won only one of their first five matches. The Red Miners have four points to their name, which sees them in tenth place.

Current Form

Chennaiyin had a dream start, as in their first match against ATK Mohun Bagan, they overturned a one-goal deficit to secure a 2-1 win. However, Thomas Brdaric’s men could only get one point from their next two matches.

They drew 1-1 against Bengaluru, before suffering a 0-2 defeat against Goa. The Marina Machans managed to make a comeback by beating East Bengal 0-1 in their fourth match, but in their last fixture, Chennaiyin was thrashed 2-6 by Mumbai City.

Jamshedpur had a completely opposite start, as they threw away a lead to lose 2-3 in their first match against Odisha. However, Aidy Boothroyd’s men then accumulated four points from their next couple of matches.

The Red Miners drew 1-1 against Mumbai City and defeated NorthEast United 1-0. However, just when it seemed they are on the right track, Jamshedpur suffered two back-to-back defeats, a 0-3 loss against Goa and a 0-1 loss against Hyderabad.

Head to Head Record

The head-to-head records are inclined in Chennaiyin’s favour, but only by the slightest of margins. Of the 10 meetings between these two sides, the Marina Machans have won four games, while the Red Miners have tasted victory on three occasions. The other three matches ended in stalemates.

The last meeting ended in a 4-1 victory for Jamshedpur. Strikes from Boris Singh, Daniel Chima Chukwu, Ritwik Das and a Deepak Devrani own goal comprised Jamshedpur’s four goals, while for Chennaiyin, Nerijus Valskis was the lone scorer.

Team News

After serving a one-game suspension, Chennaiyin’s Iranian centre-back Vafa Hakhamaneshi will be available for selection again. However, after a decent show against Mumbai City, Dutch midfielder Abdenasser El Khayati is unlikely to be dropped. Hence, Hakhamaneshi is likely to replace Fallou Diagne.

Besides that, Brdaric is expected to make another change to his starting XI. Prasanth Karuthadathkuni had a day to forget against the Islanders, as he could hardly many any inroads. Hence, Vincy Barretto is likely to start in his place.

Boothroyd is also expected to make changes to his starting XI after two consecutive defeats. Mizo midfielder Laldinpuia Pachuau suffered an injury in the match against Hyderabad, and in his place, Farukh Choudhary could be handed a start.

Besides that, right-back Laldinliana Renthlei had a difficult team keeping the Nizams’ Halicharan Narzary quiet in the last match. In his place, Kerala-born defender Muhammad Uvais could be handed a start in this match.

Predicted XIs

Chennaiyin (4-4-2): Debjit Majumder; Ajith Kumar, Vafa Hakhamaneshi, Julius Duker, Aakash Sangwan; Jiteshwor Singh, Abdenasser El Khayati, Anirudh Thapa, Vincy Barretto; Rahim Ali, Petar Sliskovic.
