Bundesliga Matchday 2 Roundup: Bayern downs Wolfsburg 2-0, Dortmund cruises to 3-1 win

After an exciting opening week filled with drama and emotions, matchday 2 of the Bundesliga offered plenty of surprises as Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig dropped points, while the Bayern Munich juggernaut kept on marching. Borussia Dortmund also registered a frantic 3-1 win over Freiburg. 

Here’s a complete rundown of how the action unfolded on matchday 2 of Bundesliga 2022-23. 

Freiburg vs Borussia Dortmund

After a tough fight with Leverkusen last week, Dortmund were made to work hard once again by Freiburg but in the end, it was the visitors who prevailed at Europa Park-Stadion and walked back with all three points in the bag. Edin Terzic’s side went down after Michael Gregoritsch put the home side in front. Freiburg was heading for a rare victory over the BVB, but Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Youssafa Moukoko, and Marius Wolf all scored in the space of 11 minutes to pick up a memorable win for Dortmund. 

Hoffenheim vs VfL Bochum

Hoffenheim registered a comeback win over VfL Bochum at the Rhein-Neckar Arena. It was a five-goal thriller, with Simon Zoller scoring twice in the space of two minutes in the first half which was a goal-fest in itself. 

After Zoller had put his side in the driving seat with his brace, Christoph Baumgartner reduced the deficit to half, while Ozan Kabak levelled the proceedings on the night. The match appeared to be headed for a 2-2 stalemate but up stepped Mu’nas Dabbur to score a late winner which sent the home fans into a frenzy. 

Werder Bremen vs VfB Stuttgart 

Werder Bremen and Stuttgart shared the spoils after a 2-2 draw at the Weserstadion. It was another drama-filled contest which saw a stoppage-time equaliser from Oliver Burke as he snatched a late point for his side. It was Bremen who had their noses in the front as Niclas Fullkrug broke the deadlock 4 minutes after the kick-off. 

Wataru Endo and Silas Katampo turned the contest on its head as the visitors were inching towards a victory, however, the Green-Whites received a late lifeline courtesy of Burke’s heroics at the death. 

RB Leipzig vs Koln

Die Roten Bullen is still waiting for their first win of the Bundesliga 2022-23 campaign, after playing two back-to-back draws. 

Timo Werner shines on his Leipzig return

The prodigal son Timo Werner scored his homecoming, with Christopher Nkunku continuing his red-hot streak in front of the goal, but Dominik Szoboszlai was given his marching order at the stroke of half-time which hurt RB Leipzig dearly. 

Despite being a man down, they held on for a point as Florian Deitz and Josko Gvardiol scored for Koln but couldn’t snatch a win. 

Bayer Leverkusen vs Augsburg

The surprise upset of the week, Leverkusen are also searching for their first points for the season after suffering back-to-back defeats at the hands of Dortmund, and most recently at, at Augsburg. 

Fredrik Jensen scored 15 minutes after the first whistle, but Charles Aranguiz equalised for Leverkusen two minutes before the half-time break. Despite peppering the Augsburg goal with an incredible 24 shots, Gerardo Seoane’s side suffered an anti-climax as Andre Hahn scored eight minutes before the end of regulation time to compound the home side’s miseries. 

Hertha Berlin vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Both Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt picked up their first points of the new Bundesliga season, having suffered opening day defeats. They played out a 1-1 draw at the iconic Olympiastadion in the German capital. 

Suat Serdar put the home side in front after just three minutes into the contest, but they were pegged back as Daichi Kamada fired in the equaliser in what was Frankfurt’s only shot on target throughout the whole 90 minutes. 

Schalke vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Bundesliga football returned back to the famed Veltins-Arena after one year in the second division, but Schalke is still searching for their first win of the season as they played out a 2-2 draw with Monchengladbach. 

In fact, the Royal Blues nearly lost two games in a row, if not for Marius Bulter’s heroics at the death. Rodrigo Zalazar found the back of the net 30 minutes after kick-off although the Foals responded with goals from Jonas Hofmann and Marcus Thuram. The hosts were staring at yet another defeat but Butler scored right at the death to snatch a late point for Schalke. 

Mainz vs Union Berlin

Mainz and Union Berlin couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes as they played out an entertaining 0-0 draw. Both sides remain in the European places despite sharing the spoils in their most recent contest. 

Mainz and Union Berlin were even stevens in terms of possession, the number of passes and chances created, but neither side could break the deadlock as it finished all square at the Mewa Arena. 

Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg

Following a 6-1 thrashing of Frankfurt, Bayern cruised to a commanding 2-0 win over Wolfsburg as first-half goals from Jamal Musiala, and the ageless Thomas Muller sealed all three points. 

As expected, the Bavarian giants dominated from start to finish and the Wolves were no match for the league leaders. Having scored eight goals already in just two games, Bayern seems unfazed by the departure of Robert Lewandowski so far.
