Atlético de Madrid will host Real Madrid CF in the Copa del Rey round of 16 match at the Estadio Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The fixture will take place on Friday, January 19, beginning at 02:00 IST.

Parimatch News will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Atlético Madrid News & Current Form:

The team of Diego Simeone looks quite good in the current season of La Liga, so far the gap is still big from the leading positions, but there is still every chance to join the championship race. In 19 rounds of the championship they scored 38 points, which is 3 points less than Athletic Bilbao and FC Barcelona, but the leading Girona FC is 11 points ahead of them.

The team scored a total of 39 goals, this result is the third in the championship. Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata are responsible for the team’s performance – both of them have scored 17 goals in all competitions.

In the last 5 rounds of the Spanish championship Atletico celebrated victory 2 times, lost as much and drew 1 time. First, they defeated UD Almeria (2:1), where Morata and Joaquín Correa distinguished themselves in the first half, and the opponent found the strength to score one goal. In the 17th round there was an away defeat to Athletic Bilbao (0:2), where they managed to create little in attack, and in defense the game did not go well.

Next up was a difficult encounter at home to Getafe CF, which ended in a 3:3 draw. Already in the 38th minute of the game Madrid remained in the minority, but at the same time twice led in the score and were even ahead (3:1), but did not have enough energy for the end of the match, where the opponent in the last minutes was able to get back in the score. After that, Madrid played a postponed match of the 4th round with Sevilla FC, which they managed to beat at home (1:0), and the victory was brought by a goal by Marcos Llorente.

In the last played 19th round of the Primera failure came up from the leader of the championship Girona (3:4). Morata’s hat-trick allowed the Madrid team to keep the score tied until extra time, but at 91 minutes their defense still faltered and the opponent snatched the most important victory for themselves.

The top scorer in the Atletico de Madrid history – Antoine Griezmann

But in the Spanish Cup Madrid started their journey in the 1/16 finals, where on the 6th of January they effortlessly defeated CD Lugo from the third division of the country (3:1). Madrid managed to score a quick goal as early as 2 minutes into the match, but conceded a goal at the end of the first half. This did not embarrass them and in the second half 2 accurate strikes of the Dutchman Memphis Depay still brought them victory and ensured passage to the next stage of the tournament.

It is worth noting that the club is a 10-time winner of the Spanish Cup, and 9 more times he played in the final. The last victory in this tournament dates back to 2013, after which Madrid did not reach the main match of the King’s Cup. In the last draw Atletico in the 1/4 finals lost to the future opponent Real Madrid (1:1, extra time 0:2).

By the way, these teams met recently in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup – on the 10th of January in the brightest match the wards of Carlo Ancelotti took the upper hand in extra time (5:3). Atletico led in the score (3:2) until the 85th minute of the meeting, but did not keep the winning score and then already in the extra time they lacked strength and at the end of the extra time they missed twice.

The Whites eventually won the tournament, beating Barcelona 4:1 in the final. Because of this, Real had less time to rest: the Super Cup final was played on the 14th of January, while Simeono’s men were preparing for another meeting with their neighbors from Madrid since the 10th, which undoubtedly gives them an edge.

It is worth noting that the Striped Ones have consistently failed when it comes to play-off matches in any tournaments against Real Madrid. For example, they lost two Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016 to the Blancos.

Also Atletico confidently entered the playoffs of the UEFA Champions League. The team scored fourteen points in six matches, getting four wins and two draws, and reached the playoffs of the tournament ahead of schedule.

The upcoming game will be missed by Reinildo Mandava, who left for the African Cup of Nations with the Mozambique national team, while Memphis Depay is likely to have another injury (the Dutchman missed the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup). Meanwhile, Pablo Barrios and Thomas Lemar are still recovering in the infirmary.

Griezmann scored in the fixture against Real Madrid and is now Atletico’s all-time top scorer – the forward will definitely be in the starting line-up, as will his attacking partner Morata (12 goals). The center of the pitch will be left to the experienced Rodrigo De Paul, Koke and Saul Niguez

Real Madrid News & Current Form:

The club from Madrid, as usually, is fighting for the gold medals of the Spanish Primera. After the first 19 matches, the club has 48 points and second place in the standings. Real have a point less than Girona, but seven points more than Barcelona.

The club scored forty goals in the gates of opponents, and conceded only eleven goals on their own (the least in the league). This season, Ancelloti’s team has played 28 matches, with the only defeat occurring in the match against upcoming opponents Atletico.

Real in the last 5 rounds of La Liga 4 times celebrated victory and 1 time played in a draw. First there was a victory over Granada CF (2:0), where in each of the halves a goal was scored. Then there was a draw (1:1) in the away match with Real Betis, where it was not possible to keep the winning score in the final stretch of the match.

In the 17th round they confidently defeated Villarreal CF (4:1), where in each of the halves they managed to score twice, and the opponent was practically not allowed to create anything at their gates.

In the next 18 round was the hardest victory away to Deportivo Alaves (1:0), where Madrid got a suspension in 54 minutes of the meeting and still in the minority were able to snatch a victory in the offset time of the match, and the author of this goal was Lucas Vazquez, who scored with a pass from Toni Kroos.

In the last matchday 19 they managed to beat RCD Mallorca in a difficult match (1:0), where the victory was brought by a winning goal by Antonio Rüdiger on 78 minutes of the match.

In the Spanish Cup Real Madrid started quite recently, where in the stage 1/16 finals on the 6th of January they beat a modest Arandina CF (3:1), which at the moment closes the table in the third strongest Spanish league.

The Madrid team in this meeting was a head stronger than their opponent, having allowed only 1 shot towards their goal and gave them almost no possession of the ball. But the Royal Club managed to unseal the opponent’s goal only in the 2nd half, and the first two goals were scored within 2 minutes.

It is worth noting that the wards of Carlo Ancelotti are the current holders of the King’s Cup, last season they beat CA Osasuna in the final with a score of 2:1.

The Blancos’ last match was in the Spanish Super Cup final, where they confidently defeated Barcelona (4:1) and won their other trophy. Vinicius Júnior was at his best in this match and netted a hat-trick by the 39th minute of the game. The Madrid side looked much better than the Catalans in terms of quality of play and deservedly won the match, creating more chances than their opponents.

Vinicius Junior scored a hat trick in the game against Barcelona in just 39 minutes

This trophy was the first for the star attacking trio of Vinicius, Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham, but first and foremost the second victory in the current campaign against the main rival Barça.

The team from the Spanish capital is also doing well in the Champions League. The stylish squad qualified for the play-offs of the Old World’s most prestigious club tournament from first place. It played in a group with FC Union Berlin, SSC Napoli and SC Braga.

Real Madrid are impressively efficient with a season average of 2.4 goals per 90 minutes. Bellingham and Vinicius Junior are in great form: the former has scored 17+6 in all competitions, the latter has netted a hat-trick against Barça – the fastest in El Clasico in the XXI century.

It is worth noting that Real have serious personnel problems in defense: Eder Militao, Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba and Vazquez are injured. None of the club’s players have left for the African Cup of Nations or the AFC Asian Cup, so Ancelotti can put out almost the same line-up as in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Vinicius will feature in attack, while Rodrygo and Bellingham will keep the Brazilian company. Arda Güler has played just two matches since joining Madrid and will also be in the starting line-up due to the inevitable rotation. Eduardo Camavinga will fill the gap on the flank of the defense, while Kepa Arrizabalaga will be replaced by Andrii Lunin at the goal.

What has been said before the match:

Coach of Atletico Madrid Diego Simeone ahead of the Spanish Cup fixture:

“It is clear that it’s not just another game because it also has a tie in between, there is no margin for any. We need our people, that the environment is as it usually is in the Metropolitano and that we can transmit energy to the fans so that they can accompany us.”

“We are going to look for situations where we believe that we can harm them and they arrive with the positive energy after winning the Super Cup right after two big games. They have a lot of enthusiasm, a very positive dynamic, and we are going to find a very good rival.”

“Our opinion has not changed since the last time. Yes there will be great respect and a great greeting to the coach and his staff, how can it be otherwise, but our people come first and we respect our people.

Carlo Ancelloti, gaffer of the Los Blancos, about his side’s recent results and the upcoming game:

“The team is good. We’ve got another very difficult game tomorrow. Atlético are a top opponent and they showed that in the Super Cup, the match was very even. We’re expecting it to be even more difficult tomorrow because they’re at home and they’re doing very well there. The best possible team will play, taking into account the journey and the fatigue.”

“Every game is different and tomorrow is a knockout game, not a  league  game. We have to consider that too. There might be extra time or penalties. Whatever has happened in the previous matches, doesn’t come into play tomorrow.”

“I like the atmosphere at this club and in this dressing room. The key to success is the calm atmosphere, a motivated group and a strong team spirit. We also play good football, we’re solid and have clear ideas. These are the three components that enable you to be successful: a motivated atmosphere, a strong team spirit and playing good football.”

“If we don’t win the derby tomorrow, we’ll come down from that cloud. Danger comes when you don’t get what you want. You have to be ready for that and prepared. It’s a very good run and I don’t know when it’ll stop, but it will. We can’t win every game. When it does, we have to get out of it quickly.”

Atlético Madrid vs Real Madrid Prediction:

Diego Simeone is familiar with how to neutralize Real Madrid, as proved with a 3:1 win at the Estadio Metropolitano at the start of the La Liga season. In cup tournaments, where the teams often meet each other, Atletico does not lose in regulation time: seven times in a row the teams have drawn. And things could easily go that way again, however, it won’t be a drab encounter.

We expect the game to be essentially attacking in nature. The Indians have changed their strategy over the course of the last year and a half. Previously it was a closed team, playing pragmatically for the result, but now Diego Simeone’s team has turned into a dashing and cheerful attacking system, which boldly besieges the opponent’s goal from match to match (they score an average of 2.05 goals per 90 minutes; the 3rd best result in La Liga). The vanguard of the attack, the best attacking duo in Spain, Griezmann (11 goals + 3 assists) and Morata (12 goals + 2 assists) are in top form and are relentlessly productive.

This new approach of course has its disadvantages, as due to the ongoing transformation of Atletico Madrid cannot find balance and reliability in the defensive line, even with the class of players that play there. In the league the Colchoneros concede 1.22 goals per game, which compared to the upcoming vis-a-vis looks bleak (Real have the best defense in the league, conceding only 0.58 per 90 minutes on average). Thus the Mattress Makers often miss a positive result when playing well: examples are the recent matches against Girona 3:4, and Real 3:5.

The attack is also in good order for Carlo Ancelotti’s boys: Vinicius Jr, fuelled by another rumored signing of Kylian Mbappe, scored a hat-trick for Barcelona in one half, not forgetting Rodrygo who has no less ability to change the course of the game. Jude Bellingham has so far shifted from scoring to dispatching the ball, while his efficiency is astonishingly high (17 G + 6 A in 24 matches in all competitions). On the flanks, everything is perfectly fine, plus there are no injuries to the attacking group players right now, just fatigue. In defense, Los Blancos’ main goalkeeper and two central defenders are injured, meaning there will be chances at the Royal Club’s gate.

Atletico should be fresher, as they were disengaged from the Spanish Super Cup matches three days earlier and flew back to Spain comfortably. Calmly prepared for the cup game, not wasting emotions on other moments. Real, in turn, spent their energies in a tough match against Barcelona and also celebrated triumph afterwards. There are reports from the press that Ancelotti will give some of the key players a rest. This is important. Atletico is not the opponent against whom you can economize, but it should be done, and this is a chance in Atletico’s favor, even though Ancelotti has a deep understanding of player’s chemistry and can build cohesive line-up even from the reserves. We should not forget that the Red and Whites will play at home, and for their fans the main enemy is of course Real Madrid, the intensity of their support will be all-time high.

We expect a great deal of initiative from the Indians in this derby, as they generally start matches vigorously. In the last four Madrid derbies, it was Atletico who opened the scoring. We should not forget about the extra motivation: Diego Simeone and his boys are clearly angry about Los Blancos after the recent Spanish Super Cup semi-final, when they led 3:2 almost to the very end. This match presents a great opportunity to get even with an opponent that has had far less time to recover and prepare.

We expect the cup Madrid derby to be full of attacking action, which will bring no shortage of goals, where Atletico Madrid will not lose in regulation time.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say: Atletico Madrid will not lose in the regulation time and the match total will be over 1.5 – Yes.
