Did the Champions League success inspire the Gunners to win the derby of North London?

Arsenal FC will host Tottenham Hotspur FC in the English Premier League 6th round match at the Emirates Stadium. The fixture will take place on Sunday, September 24, beginning at 18:30 IST.

Parimatch News will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Arsenal News & Current Form:

Last season ended in tragedy for the Gunners. Most of the championship they were in first place in the table with a huge lead, but eventually squandered the advantage and gave the title to Manchester City.

In the previous UEFA Europa League, Arteta’s boys reached the 1/8 finals, where they lost to Sporting CP on penalties (3:3, 3:5 penalties). In January they were eliminated from the fight for the Emirates FA Cup in the fourth round – again City did their best and took the trophy. Londoners also left the League Cup quickly – in November in the third round lost to Brighton & Hove Albion FC (1:3).

Granit Xhaka, Folarin Balogun, Kieran Tierney, Nicolas Pepe, Matt Turner and several other players left Arsenal in the summer. Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya have strengthened the squad.

In this season Arteta’s wards seriously intend to make up for lost opportunities in the current season. Thus, Arsenal in the opening five rounds of the EPL scored 13 points and climbed to fourth place in the standings. The gap from the leading Manchester City is only two points.

As for the goal difference, the Reds have scored nine goals (the least among the top ten) and conceded four goals – by the way, one of the best results in the league, but the attack could have been more productive.

The Gunners have beaten Nottingham Forest FC (2:1), Crystal Palace FC (1:0), Manchester United FC (3:1) and Everton FC this season, as well as drawing against Fulham FC (2:2). The club also avenged City’s humiliation by winning the FA Community Shield (1:1, 4:1 penalties)

In addition to their success in the English league, Arsenal made a spectacular return to the UEFA Champions League by defeating PSV Eindhoven ( 4:0). After a productive first half, Arteta had already started to make substitutions with Sunday’s derby with Tottenham in mind. For example, Alex Zinchenko left the field in the 58th minute. So the Reds should approach the North London Derby not only on fire, but also in good physical shape.

Arsenal’s infirmary is almost empty. Of the main squad players, only Jurrien Timber, who is out due to a torn cruciate ligament, will not help the team. By the way, at the start of the season the Dutchman replaced Zinchenko on the left wing while the Ukrainian was on sick leave.

Tottenham Hotspur News & Current Form:

The Spurs spent the last campaign as usual – they finished without trophies, and in the table they were stuck on the eighth line and did not qualify for the European Cup this season. In the Champions League they reached the 1/8 finals, where they lost to AC Milan (0:1 overall). They also said goodbye to the FA Cup and League Cup at the early stages.

In the summer, Tottenham lost their captain and main star – Harry Kane, who is already scoring for FC Bayern Munich. In addition, Harry Winks, Lucas Moura, Davinson Sanchez, Sergio Reguilon and several other players left the squad. Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario and other players have taken their places.

The team of Ange Postecoglou started the 2023/23 season much more positively. They drew 2:2 with Brentford FC in the first round and then picked up four consecutive wins against Manchester United (2:0), AFC Bournemouth (2:0), Burnley FC (5:2) and Sheffield United FC (2:1).

Thanks to this, Spurs have settled in second place, two points behind City. Only two clubs in the English league scored more than Tottenham (13): Citizens (14) and Brighton (15). The Londoners also conceded a few  – only five goals.

Ivan Perisic, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and Brian Gil will not play against Arsenal due to injuries. Giovani Lo Celso is likely to recover in time for the derby, but that’s not certain.

What has been said before the match:

Coach of the Gunners Mikel Arteta ahead of the North London derby:

“Winning always helps and maintains the spirit in the right place. This game doesn’t need any motivation, it’s the most special game of the season. It’s a derby, it’s a special moment for all of us and we just need to focus on that. “

“A new challenge, a new opportunity. Obviously they have a new manager who has done really, really well and changed the vibe and everything around the club. It’s a different style as well, so adapt to that, be ourselves and produce the performance that we need to beat them.”

“I really like the new Spurs’ coach. I had players and I know players who had him and they always speak really, really highly of him. That’s not a coincidence, and you can tell straight away he is fitting in the right way. That’s the beauty of this league, we have top, top managers, top competition and every game is very difficult.”

Spurs’ gaffer Ange Postecoglou about the upcoming opponent:

“I’ve been involved in derbies – one very significant one; you understand what it means to supporters of both clubs. They add significance to the fixture. Arsenal are a very good football side.”

“They had an outstanding season last year and strengthened this year. They’re a group that has, for the most part, grown together. You can see that there’s a real belief in them, so playing at their place will be a challenge for us.”

“We’re going to have quite a few who haven’t played in this fixture. It’s not just a derby and away from home, it’s the challenge of playing a very good football side. Again, as much as we want to talk about them, it’s the experience that makes you grow.”

“I don’t know how Arsenal playing in Europe and us not being in the Champions League because we were not good enough last season gives us an advantage. I don’t think it gives us an advantage; we would have much preferred to have a Champions League match midweek in preparation for a derby.”

Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction:

It looks like North London will remain red as the Gunners approach the match as favorites, albeit with a slight edge. The history of head-to-head encounters confirms the thesis: Spurs have been unlucky against Arsenal in recent times, losing four of their five recent clashes. In addition, another important factor is that the game will be played at the Emirates Stadium: the support of a full house is a strong advantage.

In addition, Arteta has a lot more stars at his disposal, who are also pretty cohesive when playing, even taking into account the newcomers. There are few injuries on the team, and there has been a change in the goalkeeper position, which so far is proving to be a positive, considering how much more confident David Raya is in picking up opponent’s crosses, while offering a phenomenal passing trait. The long crosses that come literally at the foot of the forwards allow the team to get out of the press faster with more success, as well as the new build up type, due to the dispatching of the ball into advanced areas almost in the opposing backfield. For example, the Spaniard made 12 successful crosses during the match against PSV.

“This goalkeeper could wear the No 10 shirt.” JĂźrgen Klopp once said of ex-Brentford goalie.

Plus the general playing tonus is expected to be higher due to the confident clean-sheet Champions League performance on the same pitch, and perhaps a little more fatigue than the upcoming vis-a-vis who do not participate in Eurocups this campaign will offset this effect.

Even so, derby results are often too unpredictable. Ange Postecoglou has had more time to prepare, but his establishing style of play and tactical patterns have already come under the spotlight of Mikel Arteta’s coaching team, it is unlikely to be anything surprising. Therefore, the Greek specialist is likely to emphasize on defensive structures, while counting on a couple of successful counter attacks or set-pieces.

Such a set-up is likely to point to an action-packed match. The hosts have scored eight goals in the last three meetings, while the visitors have scored nine. Moreover, in the last five personal clashes, the teams have only once scored less than three goals. And in three of the five rounds played, they exchanged accurate goalscoring shots with their opponents. This is also supported by the head-to-head stats: 7 of their last 10 matches have seen goals exchanged.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say: both teams will score and the match total will be over 2.5 – Yes.
