The reigning Italian champions have tremendous problems. Milan started the year with a dramatic victory over US Salernitana 1919, and then the nightmare began. During this period, the hosts have only twice managed to secure a draw – against AS Roma (2-2) and US Lecce (2-2). And it’s not even so much the losses as the obvious game regression. The defense has forgotten about reliability – three goals conceded from Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana (0:3), four from SS Lazio (0:4) and even five from US Sassuolo (2:5). In total, the team has already conceded 30 goals in the current season in Serie A, only seven clubs have more.

The attack is also suffering, as the last game against Sassuolo was the only time since mid-January when the Red and Blacks managed to score themselves. Olivier Giroud and Divock Origi were notable, and on top of that, there are no fewer injuries. Therefore, Milan is not in the best mood for the upcoming match.

The cherry on the cake is the second defeat in the Milan derby in recent weeks – last Sunday Milan lost again in a crucial match against Inter (0-1).

The final score against the Nerazzurri should not be misleading – Milan were disastrously bad from the start until the final whistle. The Red and Blacks did not create a single dangerous moment at the other side’s goal, not forgetting to regularly fail in defense. Objectively, Inter could smash the opponent.

Now let’s talk about the poor form of forward Rafael Leão. Before the pause at the World Cup the Portuguese was the engine of the team attack, but after the Mundial he was firmly seated on the bench. Perhaps the situation is influenced by Leão’s contract history. Rafael is in no hurry to extend his partnership with Milan and has already started to hint actively at his desire to play in the English Premier League. As the clouds of uncertainty loom over San Siro, AC Milan finds themselves in dire need of a spark to ignite their faltering campaign. The Rossoneri have been grappling with an inability to breach their opponent’s defenses in recent times, with the situation in front their own goal is a particularly glaring issue  (conceding at the level of the league’s outsiders).

Making matters even more complicated is the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who is currently recovering from the injury. His absence has forced Tatarusanu between the sticks, but the Romanian shot-stopper has struggled to live up to the task, boasting the worst save percentage in Serie A this term.
